A subtle wording change in the iOS 27 developer beta has renewed speculation about Apple’s first foldable iPhone. New system text refers to “batteries” in the plural, rather than the singular language used on current iPhones.
The change is notable because foldable devices often use two separate battery cells. Their internal space is divided by a hinge, making a split power arrangement more practical than a single large battery pack.
Battery Health Text Raises Questions
The plural wording appears in messages about battery condition, health decline, and replacement-component warnings. One warning reportedly states that one of the batteries may not be a genuine Apple component.
Current iPhones consistently use singular battery terminology in the Battery Health menu. The iOS 27 language could therefore indicate that Apple is preparing software support for a device with two independent cells.
Gizmochina reported that a dual-cell layout could help Apple distribute weight across both halves of a foldable body. Such a design may also help accommodate internal components around the hinge mechanism.
Reported Battery Capacity
Leaker Digital Chat Station previously said the rumored iPhone Ultra could use two cells with different capacities. If the reported figures are accurate, their combined capacity would reach 4,883 mAh.

The reported total is below earlier claims of between 5,400 mAh and 5,800 mAh. It would still be slightly higher than the 4,800 mAh battery associated with the Galaxy Z Fold 8 (Wide) in circulating information.
The gap between those estimates underlines the packaging constraints facing foldable hardware. Apple would need to balance endurance, device thickness, hinge placement, and weight distribution in a dual-battery design.
Large Displays and Camera Trade-Offs
The same rumors point to a 7.76-inch main display when the device is unfolded. A 5.49-inch cover display is expected to support use when the handset is closed.
Other iOS 27 code findings have reportedly been linked to fold status, multiple displays, and multitasking capabilities. Those functions would be particularly relevant for a device with a much larger internal screen than a conventional iPhone.
The foldable is also rumored to feature a 48 MP main camera and a 48 MP ultra-wide camera. A telephoto lens may be omitted because of limited space inside the foldable chassis.
Production Remains Unconfirmed
Apple is said to have moved some elements toward mass production after hinge issues were addressed. However, the company has not announced the final design, full specifications, or commercial name of the device.
Current rumors place the device’s possible arrival in September. Until Apple confirms its plans, the plural battery references in iOS 27 remain an intriguing software clue rather than confirmation of a launch.
