HMD Global has officially launched the Terra M, a rugged smartphone tailored for workers operating in extreme and demanding environments. This device offers military-grade durability, addressing the critical need for reliable communication tools in harsh outdoor conditions.
The Terra M is compact yet built to endure tough work sites such as construction zones, mining areas, and emergency response settings. It features a 2.8-inch touchscreen that remains responsive even when used with gloves, making it ideal for cold or dusty environments. Additional hardware includes a powerful speaker designed to maintain clear audio in noisy surroundings like heavy machinery or vehicles.
Robust Physical Durability
HMD Global designed the Terra M to meet the MIL-STD-810H military standard, indicating resistance to shocks, extreme temperatures, and water exposure. The phone also carries IP68 and IP69K ratings, ensuring protection against dust and high-pressure water jets. It can survive drops from heights of up to 1.8 meters, making it exceptionally tough for fieldwork and reducing the risk of device failure on site.
Enhanced Communication Features
The phone incorporates dedicated Push-to-Talk (PTT) functionality to enable instant voice communication among field teams. There is also an emergency button that can be customized for quick alerts, which is critical during crises. Dual SIM slots and eSIM technology provide communication flexibility, allowing users to connect to multiple networks for uninterrupted coverage.
Optimized for Enterprise Use
On the software side, Terra M supports native applications and integrates seamlessly with Mobile Device Management (MDM) systems. This accelerates deployment and simplifies device registration, enabling businesses to start using the phone with minimal technical setup. Jean-François Baril, HMD Global’s CEO, highlighted that the Terra M fits into their broader strategy to deliver secure and dependable mobile solutions for mission-critical operations.
Long Battery Life and Support Accessories
The Terra M houses a Qualcomm Dragonwing QCM2290 chipset that balances performance with power efficiency. Its battery can last up to 10 days on standby, a vital feature for workers without frequent access to charging facilities. To further enhance usability, HMD offers accessories such as a multi-device charging dock capable of charging 10 phones simultaneously and a sturdy belt clip holster, keeping devices safe and accessible on the job.
Security Commitment
HMD Global commits to providing five years of quarterly security updates for the Terra M. This level of long-term support improves device longevity, which is uncommon among rugged phones, offering businesses peace of mind for extended operational use.
Availability and Target Market
The Terra M is slated for release through HMD Secure and official partners starting in the first quarter of 2026. Its combination of durability, specialized communication tools, and enterprise-ready software positions it as a significant asset for industries reliant on resilient mobile technology. The phone’s estimated price aligns competitively with other rugged phones, approximately $400 USD, catering to companies invested in workforce safety and productivity.
HMD Global’s Terra M stands out as not just a rugged smartphone but a high-performance work tool. It bridges the gap between toughness and functionality, ensuring that workers in extreme field conditions remain connected and productive without compromise.
