Mercedes-Benz has officially launched the fully electric GLB, marking a significant shift in its luxury compact SUV lineup. This new GLB replaces the earlier combustion engine models and positions itself as a premium electric SUV with cutting-edge AI technology and an impressive driving range.

The 2026 Mercedes-Benz GLB is designed exclusively as an electric vehicle, succeeding the EQB in the brand’s electric SUV family. Despite its transition to electric powertrains, it maintains the iconic boxy design and spacious, family-friendly SUV characteristics that have defined the GLB.

Advanced Electric Architecture and Performance

Built on an 800-volt electrical architecture, the GLB introduces faster charging capabilities and enhanced energy efficiency. Mercedes-Benz offers two initial electric variants with an 85 kWh lithium-ion battery pack:

  1. GLB 250+ with EQ Technology

    • Rear-wheel drive with one electric motor
    • Maximum output: 268 hp
    • Continuous torque: 335 Nm, temporary boost to 454 Nm
    • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 7.4 seconds
    • Driving range: up to 630 km per charge
  2. GLB 350 4Matic with EQ Technology
    • All-wheel drive configuration with dual motors
    • Total power: 349 hp
    • Torque: 515 Nm
    • 0-100 km/h acceleration: 5.5 seconds
    • Driving range: approximately 615 km

This balance of power and range makes the GLB competitive in the premium EV segment. The longer wheelbase of 2.89 meters enhances interior space, particularly benefiting rear passengers. Additionally, the vehicle offers a practical cargo capacity with a 667-liter rear trunk and an extra 127-liter front trunk (frunk), which is rare for compact electric SUVs.

Futuristic Design and AI-Powered Cabin

Mercedes-Benz preserved the GLB’s boxy silhouette but modernized it with a more expressive front grille and distinctive star-shaped LED daytime running lights, connected by a sleek light bar. The rear design features vertical tail lights inspired by the EQXX concept, incorporating a thin light bar and star graphics. While this design has sparked mixed reactions, it highlights Mercedes’ ambition for a unique road presence.

Inside, the GLB is a technology showcase. Its optional Superscreen dashboard merges three high-resolution displays: a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, and two 14-inch screens for infotainment and passenger use. The MBUX system has been upgraded to its fourth generation and integrates AI developed in partnership with Microsoft and Google.

A standout feature is the MBUX Virtual Assistant powered by ChatGPT-4o. This system offers highly natural, context-aware voice interaction, allowing drivers to control navigation, vehicle settings, and access general information through conversational dialogue.

Pricing and Market Position

In Germany, pricing starts around €59,048 ($64,000) for the GLB 250+ and €62,178 ($67,200) for the GLB 350 4Matic. These figures place the GLB firmly in the premium segment rather than the mass-market electric vehicle space. Mercedes-Benz plans to broaden its appeal by introducing a more affordable entry-level EV version and a mild-hybrid 48V variant in 2026.

Significance for Mercedes-Benz and the EV Market

The electric GLB exemplifies Mercedes-Benz’s commitment to redefining the modern family SUV with intelligence, digital integration, and full electrification. Its long-range capability, rapid charging potential, and sophisticated AI interface set new standards in the luxury electric SUV category. While the bold exterior design may divide opinions, the GLB’s comprehensive technological package and driving performance underscore Mercedes’ vision for the future of premium mobility.
