Telkomsel Data Traffic Surges 11%, 2.5 Million Migrants Challenge Network Resilience During Lebaran 2026

During the Ramadan and Idulfitri (RAFI) period in 2026, Telkomsel experienced a significant surge in data traffic, reaching 70.85 petabytes (PB). This marks an increase of 11.1% compared to normal days, driven mainly by heightened digital activity among users. Many customers increased their use of video streaming, social media, and online shopping during the extended holidays.

The rise in data traffic also corresponded with a slight increase in voice service usage by 1.4%. However, this reflects a declining trend in traditional phone calls compared to the Lebaran period in 2025. The company expects the highest data payload to peak just a few days after the holiday itself, indicating continued heavy usage throughout the festive timeframe.

Customer Mobility Patterns During Lebaran 2026

Telkomsel recorded large-scale customer movements from the Jabodetabek metropolitan area, with approximately 2.5 million users relocating to Central Java during the mudik (homecoming) period. Central Java emerged as the primary destination, followed by West Java and East Java as the next most crowded locations. The substantial migration required robust network reliability, especially along transportation routes and densely populated residential areas in these regions.

Network Optimization with Advanced AI Technology

To manage this demand, Telkomsel optimized its network infrastructure at 494 priority points of interest (POIs). These included crowded places, main mudik corridors, and religious centers across Indonesia. The company deployed an Autonomous Network system supported by artificial intelligence (AI) to monitor network performance 24/7. This AI-based technology enables early detection and automatic real-time fixes for potential service disruptions.

Vice President of Global Network Operation at Telkomsel, Juanita Erawati, explained the importance of these technological measures. The AI-driven system allows the network to dynamically adapt to sudden changes in user load and maintain stable connectivity amid peak travel and communication times.

Telkomsel’s On-Ground Support and Customer Service

To ensure smooth communication throughout the mudik period, Telkomsel activated 15 flagship service posts and dozens of COMBAT units to boost signal strength in high-density areas. These measures aimed to maintain uninterrupted connectivity for millions of users celebrating and connecting with their families.

Additionally, Telkomsel encouraged customers to use digital channels like the MyTelkomsel app and AI assistants. These platforms provide real-time support and information, facilitating easy access to services despite the high user traffic during this busy period.
