Huawei has brought the numbered Mate series back to Indonesia after an absence of about five years, with the Mate 80 Pro marking the return of the Mate Pro line to the local market. During the period when Huawei was absent from this segment, the company focused more on foldable phones such as the XT and X after its comeback to Indonesia last year.
The return also closes a long gap since the Mate 40 Pro was the last model from the series sold in Indonesia in 2020. Huawei did not bring the next three generations to the local market, namely the Mate 50, Mate 60, and Mate 70, making the Mate 80 Pro a significant re-entry for the brand in the premium smartphone space.
A broader strategy, not a standalone launch
Huawei Device Indonesia Senior Retail Manager Edy Supartono said the decision to introduce the Mate 80 Pro is tied to the company’s global direction. He explained that the Mate line is launched first in China before following the global rollout pattern, which places Indonesia among the early markets to receive it.
“Since last year, our strategy has been to include all lines from all smartphone categories in Indonesia,” Edy said during the launch in Central Jakarta. That statement shows the Mate 80 Pro is part of a wider effort to expand Huawei’s product portfolio in the country.
Huawei also believes its user base in Indonesia still exists even though its smartphone lineup had been absent since 2022. During that gap, the company maintained engagement with users through other products such as tablets and wearables.
Camera remains the main selling point
The Mate series has long been associated with mobile photography, and Huawei continues that identity with the Mate 80 Pro. When the Mate 40 Pro was sold locally, it carried a price of Rp 16 million and attracted photography enthusiasts thanks to its Leica camera system.
The Mate 80 Pro no longer carries Leica branding, but Huawei is still placing photography at the center of the device. Edy said the phone is designed to deliver sharper images, more complex portraits, and more accurate colors thanks to a larger sensor and wider dynamic range.
Huawei equips the Mate 80 Pro with a 1-inch main camera sensor and XMAGE AI technology with True-to-Colour Camera 2.0 standards. The company says the system helps process, preserve, and enhance images while also supporting correction and detail sharpening to produce higher contrast results.
Camera setup on the Mate 80 Pro
Huawei’s official information lists the following camera configuration:
- 50 MP main camera with RYYB sensor
- Variable aperture f/1.4–f/4.0
- 40 MP ultrawide camera
- 48 MP telephoto macro camera
- 13 MP front camera
This setup shows that Huawei still treats imaging as the core focus of the Mate series. The combination of a large sensor, variable aperture, and AI support is intended for users who want more stable results across different lighting conditions.
Cooling and daily performance
Beyond imaging, Huawei is also highlighting improvements in the cooling system to support device performance. The Mate 80 Pro uses a new cooling solution called SuperCool Heat Dissipation, which is claimed to help maintain stable temperature flow during use.
Huawei says the update creates a smoother and more responsive experience. That emphasis matters because the Mate series is not only aimed at photography users, but also at those who need consistent performance for everyday activities.
Price and color options in Indonesia
In the Indonesian market, the Mate 80 Pro is available in three colors: black, gold, and green. Huawei sets the price at Rp 16.999.000.
Its arrival also comes at a time when several global brands are becoming more active again in Indonesia’s smartphone market. In the premium segment, Huawei is positioning the Mate 80 Pro as one of its key models to reassert the Mate identity in the country.
