Motorola Adds Active Pen Power to Moto G Stylus 2026 While Core Specs Stay Nearly Unchanged

Motorola’s Moto G Stylus line has always relied on one simple promise: built-in pen support that adds something extra to a midrange phone. The Moto G Stylus 2026 keeps that identity intact, but the way it delivers the stylus experience is the real story, not the usual small hardware bumps.

The new model looks familiar and, in many areas, it is. Yet Motorola has shifted the value of the device by moving from a passive stylus on the Moto G Stylus 2025 to an active stylus on the Moto G Stylus 2026, and that change matters far more than the limited spec updates elsewhere.

The stylus becomes the main upgrade

For users who write notes, sketch, or rely on pen input for work, the new stylus is the clearest reason to care about the 2026 version. The active pen supports pressure sensitivity and tilt detection in compatible apps, which allows thicker or thinner strokes depending on how hard it is pressed and shading effects when the pen is angled.

That puts the Moto G Stylus 2026 closer to the feel of a more capable digital pen, while the older model’s passive stylus had noticeable lag in Android Central’s testing. Motorola said it improved stylus sensitivity on the previous generation, but the 2026 model is the one that appears to deliver the more practical upgrade for everyday use.

Motorola also says the stylus can last up to 100 hours on a single charge. When placed back in its silo, it is said to fully recharge in 15 minutes, making the pen easier to rely on throughout the day.

Core hardware stays very close

Outside the pen, the two phones remain closely matched. Both the Moto G Stylus 2026 and Moto G Stylus 2025 use the Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, 8GB of LPDDR5X RAM, and storage options of 128GB or 256GB.

The display hardware is also unchanged. Each model carries a 6.7-inch AMOLED panel with a 1220 x 2712 resolution, a 120Hz refresh rate, and Gorilla Glass 3 protection.

The brightest change in the display section is peak brightness. Motorola increased that figure from 3,000 nits on the older model to 5,000 nits on the Moto G Stylus 2026, which should help visibility in bright outdoor conditions.

Small battery gains, familiar charging

Battery capacity has changed only slightly, moving from 5,000mAh to 5,200mAh. Charging support remains the same, with 68W wired charging and 15W wireless charging available on both phones.

That means the newer model does not try to win through battery or charging speed, and the overall endurance story still looks closely tied to the same basic platform. The upgrades are present, but they are measured rather than transformative.

Design and durability keep the same formula

Motorola has kept the shape and size almost identical. The Moto G Stylus 2026 measures 162.2 x 74.8 x 8.3 mm and weighs 192 grams, while the previous model comes in at 191 grams.

The back still uses a faux-leather finish, and Motorola has introduced Pantone Coal Smoke and Pantone Lavender Mist as new color options. The camera module area also appears to have only subtle changes, keeping the design within the same familiar family.

Durability is one area where the newer phone clearly moves ahead. Both devices carry MIL-STD-810H certification, but the Moto G Stylus 2026 adds an IP69 rating, while the Moto G Stylus 2025 tops out at IP68. That gives the newer device an additional edge in water resistance.

Cameras remain steady, with software additions

Camera hardware follows the same low-change pattern. The Moto G Stylus 2026 still uses a 50MP main camera, a 13MP ultrawide camera with autofocus for macro shooting, and a 32MP front camera.

Motorola has added software features such as Action Shot, Super Zoom, and AI-based Signature Style, but these additions sit more in the enhancement category than in the hardware-upgrade category. The camera system remains broadly familiar between the two generations.

Price changes the buying decision

The sharper value question comes down to cost. The Moto G Stylus 2026 starts at $499, while the 256GB version is priced at $599. By comparison, the Moto G Stylus 2025 launched at $399, and Android Central notes that the 256GB version can now be found at $350 outside major discount periods.

That pricing gap makes the older phone look especially competitive for anyone who only uses a stylus occasionally. Motorola tries to soften the impact by bundling extras, with the base model reportedly including four Moto Tags and the 256GB version adding items such as a Moto Watch and Moto Buds Loop.

For people who will actively use the pen every day, the Moto G Stylus 2026 offers the more meaningful experience because of its active stylus. For buyers who mainly want a capable midrange phone with occasional pen input, the Moto G Stylus 2025 still delivers a similar overall package at a much lower cost.
