Google is folding Fitbit’s software identity into a broader health platform, and the change reaches far beyond a simple rename. The company is turning the Fitbit app into Google Health, while also pushing Gemini AI into a more central role in tracking sleep, wellness, medical records, and coaching.
The new direction signals that Google wants one unified place for personal health data instead of separate experiences for fitness and health. That shift is especially important for long-time Fitbit users, because the familiar app is being absorbed into a platform that now covers more than steps, workouts, and wearable statistics.
A new home for Fitbit data
Google Health app will launch with four main tabs: Today, Fitness, Sleep, and Health. That layout shows the product moving from basic activity tracking toward a more complete health management hub.
The app is not limited to Fitbit data alone. Google says it will also support information from Health Connect, Google services, and even Apple Health, giving users a broader view of their health in one place.
Users will also be able to choose which data sources get priority inside the app. That control matters as Google expands the amount of information the platform can collect and display.
Gemini takes the lead in premium features
The paid tier is changing as well, with Fitbit Premium becoming Google Health Premium. At the center of that subscription is Google Health Coach, an AI-powered feature built on Gemini for premium users.
Google says Health Coach will provide workout guidance, sleep insights, nutrition advice, and adaptive fitness plans. The system was developed with input from health experts and clinical advisers, which positions it as more than a generic chatbot-style add-on.
Google Health Premium is priced at $9.99 per month or $99 per year after the free access period ends. Buyers of Fitbit Air also receive three months of free subscription access.
Google also says the premium health service is already included in Google AI Pro and Ultra. That makes the health offering part of a larger AI subscription strategy rather than a standalone fitness add-on.
Medical records and sharing are part of the plan
One of the biggest changes is the move beyond fitness metrics into medical records. That addition pushes Google Health app well past the role Fitbit has traditionally played as a wearable companion.
Google also says users will eventually be able to securely share health data with friends, family, and doctors. The company says that capability is coming soon as part of the platform’s continued development.
Some classic Fitbit community features will return as well. Google has not abandoned the social side of Fitbit entirely, even as it rebuilds the software experience under a new brand.
What happens to current users
Existing Fitbit users will move to Google Health app automatically. That means the transition should not force current users to start over when the new platform replaces the old one.
Google is also preparing to migrate Google Fit users into Google Health app, with that process set to begin later this year. The move confirms that Google is consolidating its health products into a single platform.
The launch is scheduled to start rolling out on 19 May 2026. At the same time, the Fitbit name is still being used on the hardware side, including the new Fitbit Air, even as the app experience shifts fully toward Google Health.
Privacy remains a key concern
As the app takes on more sensitive information, Google says Fitbit users’ health data will remain protected. The company also states that this data will not be used for Google ads.
That assurance is likely to matter more as the app begins handling broader health records and data from multiple platforms. With Google Health, Fitbit is no longer just a tracker for movement and sleep, but part of a much larger system aimed at organizing health information and AI guidance in one place.
