iPhone 17 Gets Rare 618 Cuts in China, While Android Prices Keep Climbing

Apple is taking an unusual path in China’s 618 shopping season: instead of holding the line on pricing, it has pushed the iPhone 17 family lower through a mix of retail discounts, trade-in support, and government subsidies. That move stands out at a time when many Android phones are moving in the opposite direction.

The result is a sharper price gap in the premium market, and one that now looks harder for Android rivals to close. With Apple keeping the iPhone 17 series competitive on price while several Android models get more expensive, the company has turned a major sales event into a stronger showcase for its own lineup.

Heavy discounts across the iPhone 17 range

According to PChome on May 15, JD.com is running an iPhone discount program through June 21. Buyers of the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max can receive a direct 1,000 yuan voucher, or about US$147, along with trade-in subsidies of up to 1,000 yuan.

After those promotions, the iPhone 17 Pro starts at 6,999 yuan, or US$1,027. That kind of reduction is rare for Apple products, especially in the higher-end segment, where prices often remain firm even without major promotions.

The standard model has also seen a notable cut. The iPhone 17 256GB, which was originally priced at 5,999 yuan, or 880 dollars, is now available for 4,499 yuan, or 660 dollars.

That represents a 25 percent drop, helped by a combination of discount coupons, trade-in subsidies, and government support. The scale of the price cut makes the series more visible to shoppers who may have been comparing Apple with high-end Android alternatives.

Apple’s mid-tier push gets stronger

The more affordable iPhone 17e has also been pulled down by the same pricing environment. After subsidies, its price falls to 3,499 yuan, or US$514.

At that level, the device is described as highly competitive against Android phones in the same bracket. Apple is therefore not only defending its premium position, but also making a stronger case in the mid-range market.

That is important because Apple typically protects its premium image with stable pricing. The 618 promotions change that dynamic by placing the iPhone 17 closer to consumers who might otherwise have chosen a mid-range Android phone.

Android prices are heading higher

What makes the situation more striking is that Apple has not raised the selling price of the iPhone 17 series. In contrast, many Android phones in the market have become more expensive.

The main reason is the rising cost of the new-generation Snapdragon chip. That increase has forced rival smartphone makers to adjust retail prices to protect their margins.

As a result, the 618 campaign is widening the price gap between iPhone models and many premium Android phones. PChome says that if Apple continues to keep prices at this level, other smartphone makers will find it even harder to catch up.

Why 618 matters for smartphone sales

The 618 festival is one of China’s two biggest shopping periods, alongside 11/11. It is a key moment for smartphone brands to drive sales and attract new buyers.

With retailer discounts layered on top of government subsidies, the iPhone 17 series is expected to remain a strong performer during the promotion window. For Apple, the timing offers a rare chance to combine premium branding with a more aggressive price position.
