Final Injury Report Looms Over Valkyries-Liberty, Sabrina Ionescu And Veronica Burton Set For Tonight?

The New York Liberty return home Thursday night for an interconference matchup against the Golden State Valkyries, and the main focus is the final injury report. Sabrina Ionescu and Veronica Burton are both available for the game, while several other key names on both rosters remain on the list.

New York enters the matchup at 3-1 after a road win over the Portland Fire last Thursday. Breanna Stewart powered that victory with 22 points and seven rebounds, and Pauline Astier added 20 points and three rebounds to help the Liberty stay in control.

What the Liberty are facing

The Liberty’s injury report carries six players, and the biggest question centers on Ionescu and Satou Sabally. Ionescu is listed as questionable because of a left foot injury, but she has a chance to make her season debut after scrimmaging during Monday’s practice.

Sabally is also questionable because of reconditioning, and she, too, could make her season debut Thursday. Betnijah Laney-Hamilton is questionable for personal reasons, while Marine Fauthoux is out because of reconditioning.

Leonie Fiebich and Raquel Carrera are both ruled out because they remain away from the team due to overseas obligations. That leaves New York with a rotation that could still look different depending on the final call on its unavailable and questionable players.

Golden State’s availability picture

Golden State comes in at 2-1 after a home loss to the Chicago Sky last Wednesday. Gabby Williams led the Valkyries in that game with 18 points and five rebounds, and Veronica Burton added 16 points, three rebounds and four assists.

Burton is not on Golden State’s injury report, despite missing practice on Sunday because of an illness. She is expected to be available against the Liberty, which gives the Valkyries one of their key ball-handlers and creators for a tough road test.

Cecilia Zandalasini has been ruled out with a concussion and will miss her third straight game. Juste Jocyte is also out because of reconditioning, and Iliana Rupert remains sidelined due to pregnancy.

Why the injury report matters

The status of Ionescu and Sabally could shape how the Liberty manage this matchup, especially against a Golden State team that has already shown it can compete early in the season. New York has already leaned on Stewart and Astier for scoring, but the return of more frontline talent would change the team’s balance immediately.

For Golden State, Burton’s availability helps offset the absence of Zandalasini and the other out players. The Valkyries still have enough perimeter production to challenge New York, but their depth will be tested against a Liberty team that wants to keep building momentum at home.

Fans can watch the game from New York at 8:00 p.m. ET on Amazon Prime Video, with both teams entering the night trying to push through injury concerns and secure an important early-season win.
