Storms Of Life Turned Randy Travis Into A Country Legend, The 1986 Debut That Changed Everything

Forty years ago, Randy Travis released the debut album that changed his life and helped define a new era in country music. Storms of Life arrived on June 2, 1986 and became the starting point for a career that later earned him induction into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 2016.

The album did more than introduce a new voice. It gave Travis the breakthrough he had chased for years after struggling to get noticed in the late 1970s and early 1980s, even after moving to Nashville.

A debut that arrived after years of rejection

Travis did not break through quickly, and the early part of his career was marked by repeated setbacks. Labels at the time were leaning toward a more pop-country sound, which made his traditional style harder to sell.

His wife, Mary, said he kept believing in the music even after years of hearing “No, no, no, you’re too country.” She added that the question became where a country singer could go if Nashville did not seem to be the answer.

That persistence eventually paid off. During the 1985 Fan Fair in Nashville, Travis performed “On the Other Hand,” and the crowd of more than 20,000 responded with enthusiastic applause before he could finish.

The song later became his first No. 1 hit.

The album that opened the door

Storms of Life became the project that turned that momentum into a lasting career. Travis was initially limited to 10 songs for the album, but a 2021 reissue added three more tracks and offered a fuller view of the sessions.

Mary Travis later told Taste of Country that he had actually recorded 20 songs for the album. Seven of those songs remain unaccounted for, even after the reissue added its extra material.

“If you find them, let us know,” she said, while standing beside Travis, who smiled and laughed in agreement. She also said she assumed Warner Bros. still had the recordings because all of the songs were taken into the studio.

A legacy that lasted beyond the breakthrough

Travis’s rise did not stop with one album or one hit single. His career went on to include seven Grammy wins and 16 Grammy nominations, reflecting the reach of the music that began with Storms of Life.

His story also includes serious health challenges. In July 2013, Travis was hospitalized with viral cardiomyopathy and suffered a near-fatal stroke just three days later, according to Today, before undergoing surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.

During physical therapy, he developed aphasia, a disorder that affects communication. The Mayo Clinic says aphasia can affect speech, writing, and the ability to understand spoken and written language.

Even with those struggles, the album that began his rise remains the centerpiece of his legacy, along with the songs and performances that helped make Randy Travis one of country music’s defining voices.
