Jacksonville Braces For The Day’s Heaviest Rain, Flooding Risk Builds Through Afternoon

Heavy rain and thunderstorms are expected to hit Southeast Georgia and Northeast Florida, with the strongest impacts focused on the Jacksonville area and nearby communities. The main concern is localized flooding, since rain is falling fast enough that the ground may not absorb it quickly.

Conditions may look calm early in the day, but that is expected to change as showers and storms build and spread across the region. Officials are urging people to stay alert, use caution while driving or parking, and prepare for sudden changes in weather.

Rain and wind will ramp up this afternoon

Forecasts call for showers and storms to become widespread just after 1 p.m., with the most active period likely after 2 p.m. Winds could strengthen along with the rain, with gusts expected to reach 40 mph to 60 mph during the afternoon.

Rain totals could vary sharply across the area, from about a half inch to as much as 3 inches in places between Jacksonville and St. Augustine. That kind of spread means some neighborhoods may see nuisance flooding while others get less rain.

Flooding is the main threat

The National Weather Service says the system does not bring a risk of hail or tornadoes. Even so, the combination of heavy rain and strong gusts can still create hazards by knocking down tree limbs or power lines.

Localized flooding remains the biggest concern because the rain is expected to arrive in a short window. Drivers are being told to watch for water pooling on roads, especially in low-lying or poorly drained areas.

What people should watch for

Weather radar showed quiet conditions early, but that is expected to change quickly as storms move in. Residents heading outside are being advised to carry rain gear and pay close attention to where they walk, drive, and park.

The Weather Authority is also encouraging people to follow real-time alerts as the rain moves through tonight and into Wednesday morning. That could be especially important for anyone commuting, running errands, or spending time outdoors.

Better weather returns later in the week

The heavy rain is not expected to last long, and conditions should improve by Wednesday night. Rain chances then taper off through Thursday and Friday as skies clear and more sunshine returns.

Temperatures are expected to dip into the 70s on Wednesday before climbing back into the 80s through Friday and into the weekend. By Saturday and Sunday, beachgoers should see warmer, sunnier weather, although sunscreen will be needed.

Even with the stormy setup now, there is no sign of brewing trouble in the Atlantic or the Gulf for the area at this time. For now, the focus stays on the incoming rain, the possibility of localized flooding, and the strong afternoon gusts that could affect travel and outdoor plans.
