Rodón and Messick Set Up Another Tight Yankees-Guardians Battle in Cleveland

Author: Qoo Media

The Yankees and Guardians have already turned this series into a grind, and another low-scoring afternoon looks likely in Cleveland. Carlos Rodón and Parker Messick bring similar numbers to the mound, which makes run support the biggest question of the day.

Rodón has been solid through five starts, posting a 2.88 ERA and 3.08 xERA that point to more than simple results luck. The concern has been his control, with a walk rate above 15 percent of batters faced and five free passes in his return start against the Brewers.

He has not often allowed multiple walks in a start this season, but limiting traffic will matter against a Guardians lineup that can still punish mistakes. His home run rate has also been unusually low so far, and that number is likely to move toward a more normal level.

Messick enters his first full season with a similar-looking profile and narrower error bars for now. He is walking hitters about twice as often as he did last year, while also carrying a more typical home run rate.

The two left-handers are separated by only .15 points in FIP, which helps explain why this matchup feels so even. Cleveland may not bring overwhelming power, but it has enough capable bats to make Rodón work if he falls behind in counts.

New York is again using the full lefty lineup, with Paul Goldschmidt leading off and Amed Rosario cleaning up. Ali Sánchez is in the nine spot behind the plate, a move that gives the Yankees a platoon edge and also reflects the need for a fresh backup catcher after J.C. Escarra’s last game.
