Eloy Room is set for a major workload as Curacao’s goalkeeper at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The first-time World Cup side is expected to face plenty of pressure, and Room will be central to how long they can withstand it.

What makes his story stand out is that he was born in the Netherlands. Even so, he has represented Curacao for more than a decade and helped lead the team to its breakthrough moment.

Why Room Can Play For Curacao

Curacao is part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, which creates sporting overlap between the two nations. According to the reporting, Room is eligible through his father’s heritage, which opened the door for him to represent Curacao internationally.

He could have tried to compete for a place with the Dutch national team while growing up in the Netherlands. Instead, he made his Curacao debut in June 2015 and has stayed with the team ever since.

A Veteran Presence In A Historic Squad

Room enters the World Cup with 72 caps and is tied with teammate Leandro Bacuna for the most appearances in Curacao history. He also delivered a clean sheet in the decisive qualifying match against Jamaica that secured Curacao’s first World Cup berth.

His club career has taken him across several teams, including Vitesse, Go Ahead Eagles, PSV, Columbus Crew, Cercle Brugge and Miami FC. That gives Curacao a goalkeeper with wide experience, even if much of the world is now just getting familiar with him.

Room currently plays for Miami FC in the USL Championship, the second tier of U.S. soccer. That keeps him in North America for the tournament and adds another layer to his unusual international path.
