Milly Alcock’s Supergirl Cape Carries a Hidden Link to Christopher Reeve

Milly Alcock’s Supergirl costume carries a direct connection to DC’s most iconic big-screen past. The cape she wears in the film was remade using material from Christopher Reeve’s original Superman cape.

Alcock said on the Raiders of the Lost Podcast that the production found about 16 meters of the fabric and used it in the back of her cape. The detail gives her solo DCU debut an unexpected piece of superhero history built into the costume.

A Costume With Legacy Built In

Reeve played Clark Kent and Superman in Richard Donner’s 1978 Superman, then returned for Superman II, Superman III, and Superman IV: The Quest for Peace. He died at age 52 in 2004, and the recycled fabric ties Alcock’s role to that earlier era of the franchise.

What Supergirl Is About

Supergirl premieres June 26 in theaters and Imax, with Craig Gillespie directing for Warner Bros. Alcock stars as Kara Zor-El, who is celebrating her 23rd birthday while traveling across the galaxy with her dog Krypto.

The film also stars Jason Momoa as Lobo, Eve Ridley as Ruthye Mary Knolle, and Matthias Schoenaerts as Krem. It is based on Tom King’s 2022 comic book series Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, illustrated by Bilquis Evely and adapted for the screen by Ana Nogueira.

In the comic, Supergirl and the young alien girl Knolle hunt down Krem of the Yellow Hill after he kills Knolle’s father in cold blood. That source material gives the movie a darker mission-driven framework around Alcock’s version of the character.
