Christopher Jackson is heading back to Hamilton, bringing the role that helped define his Broadway rise with him. The Grammy and Emmy winner will return as George Washington starting Sept. 8, with the limited run scheduled through Jan. 3, 2027.
A familiar voice returns to the Richard Rodgers Theatre
Jackson told www.today.com that the pull to revisit the show grew after Hamilton marked its 10-year anniversary in 2025. “There are few opportunities that you get to have that give you a chance to really dig in,” he said, adding that it is “the same old building. My favorite building in New York.”
He also said he is refreshing his notes and lines, but he is not overly worried about stepping back into the part. “I’ve done it a few times,” Jackson joked.
Why this return matters
Jackson originally played George Washington in the production’s Off-Broadway run in 2015 before continuing with the show when it moved to Broadway’s Richard Rodgers Theatre on Aug. 6, 2015. His commanding delivery on songs like “History Has Its Eyes on You” and “One Last Time” helped earn him a Tony Award nomination for best featured actor in a musical.
In a statement, Jackson described the comeback as a “deeply meaningful homecoming.” He said the show changed his life and called it one of the great honors of his career.
What the production says
Hamilton producer Jeffrey Seller welcomed the return, saying Lin-Manuel Miranda wrote George Washington “with Chris’ gorgeous voice and musicality in his head.” Seller added, “How lucky are we that we get to experience his George Washington one last time?”
Jackson’s engagement begins at the Richard Rodgers Theatre in New York City, and tickets are already on sale through BroadwayDirect.com. The limited run comes after fellow original cast member Leslie Odom Jr. returned to the show in 2025 for a sold-out 12-week run as Aaron Burr.
Odom, who won a Tony for best leading actor, later said he will play Aaron Burr again in London for his West End debut in July. That run is set to last two months, extending the show’s reunion with one of its original stars beyond Broadway.
