Toronto’s coaching search appears to be nearing a decision, and one lesser-known name has entered the conversation. Pat Ferschweiler, the head coach at Western Michigan, is among the candidates under consideration for the Maple Leafs job.
GM John Chayka said the search was in its “final phases” and that the team had recent in-person meetings, with a decision expected “in the next several days.” That timeline has put added attention on a process that has already produced a mix of familiar and unexpected names.
A coach with championship credentials
Ferschweiler has spent the past five seasons leading Western Michigan at the NCAA level. He guided the program to a National Championship in 2025, which adds a notable accomplishment to his coaching résumé.
Before taking over at Western Michigan, the 56-year-old spent one season as an assistant coach with AHL Grand Rapids. He also worked for four seasons with the Red Wings alongside Jeff Blashill, giving him NHL experience on an established staff.
The Maple Leafs search has also been linked to other candidates, including David Carle, Dallas Eakins, Peter Laviolette and Joe Pavelski. Sportsnet reports that Toronto has done a good job of keeping several contenders out of the limelight, which suggests there may still be names to surface before the official announcement.

Ferschweiler is not the most publicized option in the group, but his recent success and background in both the NCAA and pro ranks make him a credible addition to the list. With Toronto said to be in decision mode, the focus now shifts to which candidate the organization believes fits best for the next stage.
