A severe weather outbreak swept across the Midwest on Wednesday, leaving behind tornado reports, damaging winds, large hail and widespread power outages across multiple states. FOX Weather’s storm reports map showed the heaviest concentration of damage from Iowa through Illinois and into Indiana.

Communities in the path of the storms reported structural damage, downed trees and power lines, while emergency crews and National Weather Service survey teams prepared to assess the full scope of the damage in the days ahead. The threat also remained active as additional rounds of severe weather continued to move through the region.

Damage Reports Spread From Iowa To Indiana

The outbreak produced a broad corridor of impacts across the Midwest, with several tornadoes confirmed during the day and more reports of wind damage and large hail coming in as supercells developed ahead of the main line of storms. A stretch from Iowa through Illinois and into Indiana appeared to take the brunt of the event.

In Charleston, Illinois, reports of severe storm damage included downed trees, flipped mobile homes and structural damage at the Coles County Fairgrounds. Police also urged drivers to stay off the roads because of heavy congestion and dangerous conditions.

Tornado Warnings And Debris Signatures Raised The Threat

One of the most dangerous moments came in central Indiana, where a large and extremely dangerous tornado prompted a Particularly Dangerous Situation warning. Forecasters warned residents that flying debris could be deadly, mobile homes would be destroyed and considerable damage to homes, businesses and vehicles was likely.

FOX Weather’s Debris Tracker later showed a debris signature extending roughly 20 miles northeast of the tornado track in Clark County, Indiana, suggesting material was lofted high enough to fall far from the main circulation. The radar signal underscored the violent nature of the storm and the possibility that debris may have been falling in communities outside the tornado path.

Large Hail And Power Losses Added To The Damage

Large hail was also a major hazard across the outbreak. The largest report reached 3.0 inches in diameter in Arthur, Illinois, while other notable reports included 2.75-inch hail in Humboldt, 2.5-inch hail in Lovington and 2.0-inch hail in Niantic.

Power outages climbed quickly as severe storms moved through Illinois, with nearly 40,000 customers without electricity at one point, according to PowerOutage.com. Henderson County was among the hardest-hit areas, with about 90% of customers losing power after the storms.

Weather officials warned that the severe threat would continue into the evening and overnight across Illinois, Indiana, Wisconsin and Michigan, with additional storms capable of producing destructive wind gusts, large hail and the potential for more tornadoes. www.foxweather.com continued tracking the storm reports, warning updates and damage assessments as the outbreak evolved.
