All My Children Alum Paul Avery Dies at 84 After Tragic New Jersey House Fire

Former soap opera actor Paul Avery and his wife, Sheila Avery, died in a house fire at their New Jersey home, their daughter confirmed. The loss has left the family mourning two parents remembered for a close and loving bond with their children.

Kyle Avery shared the news on Facebook on Tuesday, June 16, writing, “I’m devastated to share that our parents, Paul and Sheila Garry Avery, passed away early this morning.” She added, “We loved them so much, and they loved us so much, and nobody ever had to wonder if that was so.”

Paul Avery’s Career in Television and Film

Paul Avery was 84 at the time of his death and spent two decades working in Hollywood. He had guest-starring roles on Soap and Three’s Company, appeared in the original Superman movie in 1978, and later played Hughie the bartender on All My Children.

In later years, he shifted into writing and served as executive editor of the Ridge View Echo online newspaper. In a 2023 profile, Avery said, “The great thing about living in a small town is that you can actively participate in it.”

More Than Acting

Outside of entertainment, Avery was known for his many other interests and public service. He was an avid skydiver and motorcyclist, and he also served in the United States National Guard, including a year as a helicopter crew chief in the Vietnam War.

Paul and Sheila Avery were parents to two daughters, Kyle and Parker. Kyle’s post also thanked the Blairstown Fire Department for its efforts, while service plans are expected to follow.
