Apple may be preparing one of its biggest changes to the iPhone launch calendar in more than a decade. If the latest supply-chain signals prove accurate, the standard iPhone 18 could miss the usual fall debut and arrive only in 2027.
The shift would mark a major break from Apple’s long-running September pattern, when the full flagship lineup usually appears together. Under the new approach, the company would appear to be separating premium models from the more affordable versions.
Premium models first, regular iPhone later
Reports cited by MacRumors suggest Apple is reserving the autumn launch window for higher-end devices. In that scenario, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max would arrive in the second half of 2026.
The same period is also expected to feature Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and a possible successor to the iPhone Air would then follow in spring 2027.
This would create a clear divide between buyers of Apple’s premium phones and those waiting for the regular lineup. It would also give Apple more room to spread attention across the year as the product range expands.
Why Apple may be changing the schedule
One reason for the split appears to be the arrival of the foldable model. By placing the most expensive new products in the second half of the year, Apple could keep the spotlight on its premium portfolio before turning to the standard models later.
That approach may also help Apple manage production more smoothly as more devices compete for supply and manufacturing capacity. A staggered calendar could reduce pressure at launch time while making the lineup easier to plan.
Largan Precision, a camera-lens supplier linked to iPhone production, added fuel to the speculation. Chairman Lin En-ping said at a shareholder meeting that a major U.S. customer had moved a new product launch to the first quarter of 2027.
Lin did not name the customer or the product, but the timing closely matches the emerging iPhone rumor cycle. The detail has been widely interpreted as an additional sign that Apple is adjusting its release rhythm.
What is expected from iPhone 18
For the standard iPhone 18, the biggest visible changes may remain limited. Current reports suggest Apple is focusing more on internal upgrades than on a dramatic redesign.
Among the most frequently mentioned improvements is the A20 chip, which is expected to use a 2-nanometer process. That move is aimed at improving both performance and power efficiency.
Other rumored upgrades include up to 12GB of RAM, a higher-resolution front camera, and a brighter display. Some leaks also say Apple could shrink the Dynamic Island across the iPhone 18 family, rather than keeping that change exclusive to Pro models.
Apple is also said to be looking for ways to hold down production costs. That effort could influence component choices and help prevent a major price jump, although the exact details have not been made clear.
For now, Apple has not publicly commented on the reports. Until the company confirms its plans, the possibility of a delayed standard iPhone 18, an earlier Pro launch, and the debut of a foldable iPhone should be treated as unannounced but increasingly credible speculation.
