A serious crash in Jasper County left a local man badly hurt and sent him by air to Mercy Joplin after his SUV crossed the center line on Mo-96. Friends later identified the driver as Matt Miller, an ESPN analyst, and said he faces a long recovery.
The collision happened about 3:50 p.m. Wednesday, June 17, 2026, 1/3 mile east of Mo-43, according to reports that alerted E-911. Oronogo Fire, Jasper County Deputies and METS ambulance all responded to the scene.
How the crash unfolded
Investigators said a 2023 Bronco traveling eastbound on Mo-96 crossed the center line and struck a semi tractor trailer. The semi, a 2024 International, was westbound on the same road and was driven by a 28-year-old man from Springfield, Mo., who was not injured.
MSHP Troop D, Jasper Co. Zone said the Bronco struck the front driver’s side of the semi after the semi attempted to avoid it. The Bronco then ran off the south side of the road, while the semi went off the north side, overcorrected and traveled off the south side of the road.
Road closure and cleanup
M&M Wrecker removed both vehicles and debris from the scene after the crash. Mo-96 stayed closed for about 2.5 hours during the investigation and cleanup before reopening around 6:30 p.m.
The crash drew attention not only because of the severity of the injuries, but also because of Miller’s public profile. www.koamnewsnow.com reported that friends identified him as the driver and said he has a long road to recovery.
