Prince Harry and Meghan Markle may be heading to a place that carries deep family meaning when they return to the U.K. next month. Royal experts told Fox News Digital that Althorp House, Princess Diana’s ancestral home, could be among the Sussexes’ possible stays.
The reported trip would be the first time in four years that Harry, who lives in California, has returned to his home country with Meghan and their two children. The Sussexes are expected to travel to Britain for celebrations tied to the one-year countdown to the Invictus Games Birmingham 2027, according to the BBC.
Diana’s legacy looms large over the possible visit
Althorp has become a focal point because the estate is scheduled to close to visitors on July 10 and 11, the same dates Harry and Meghan are expected to be in the U.K., People reported. The property is also where Diana is buried, away from the public spotlight.
British broadcaster and photographer Helena Chard told Fox News Digital that the estate would give Harry a private way to connect with his mother’s story. “Harry can engage with his mother’s story on his own terms, without the royal household’s protocol,” she said.
Chard also said Althorp offers “privacy, seclusion and a direct connection to his mother’s memory,” adding that it provides something Buckingham Palace cannot. She said it is also “exactly the comfy luxury Meghan prefers,” while Harry has spoken about wanting Archie and Lilibet to know Diana’s story.
Why Althorp stands out
Royal commentator Amanda Matta said staying at Althorp rather than a royal property would send a message about Harry’s priorities. “Staying at Althorp instead of a royal property would definitely send a message that Harry is prioritizing a connection to Diana and his family’s privacy over institutional alignment right now,” she told Fox News Digital.
Matta added that the estate could also help the Sussexes avoid a public royal encounter. “The schedules of the senior royals are highly managed, and if they don’t want to bump into Harry and Meghan, they won’t,” she said.

People previously reported that King Charles had offered the Sussexes accommodations on a royal estate, while the outlet also said he had offered Harry a stay at Buckingham Palace, which he declined. Fox News Digital reached out to Buckingham Palace for comment, and an Archewell spokesperson said the organization would not discuss the couple’s accommodations for security reasons.
Buckingham Palace has been undergoing extensive renovations and has largely fallen out of use since Charles became king. Charles reportedly prefers to stay at Clarence House or Highgrove, while Prince William has also signaled that Buckingham Palace will not be his primary residence as king.
For Harry, a stay at Althorp would also carry a personal layer beyond logistics. The visit would come shortly after Diana’s July 1 birthday and could be especially meaningful for Lilibet, whose middle name honors her grandmother.
Matta said Althorp would make a casual royal run-in unlikely, especially during the summer social season. She added that the estate is one of several options for the Sussexes’ U.K. stay, but one that keeps the focus firmly on Diana’s legacy and family privacy.
