Apple’s next move in its experimental iPhone lineup appears split between momentum and hesitation. On one side, the company is said to have internally confirmed iPhone Ultra 2, even before the first foldable iPhone Ultra reaches the market.
On the other, iPhone Air 3 is reportedly far from secure, with its future now tied closely to how iPhone Air 2 performs commercially. That contrast suggests Apple is treating its foldable and ultra-thin strategies very differently.
iPhone Ultra 2 already has a direction
According to Digital Chat Station, iPhone Ultra 2 has already been confirmed internally at Apple. The model is expected to feature a wider foldable display than the first generation.
However, the display technology may remain largely unchanged. The same leak indicates that Apple is unlikely to overhaul the panel for the second generation, even as it expands the foldable area.
This detail matters because the first iPhone Ultra has not even debuted yet. It is still expected to launch alongside the iPhone 18 Pro line in 2026.
Early rumors point to a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch cover screen. The device is also said to use a titanium body and the A20 Pro chip.
One of the most striking claims is its thickness. When unfolded, the first iPhone Ultra is rumored to measure just 4.5 mm, which would make it the thinnest foldable phone on the market.
If Apple keeps the same display technology for iPhone Ultra 2 while widening the foldable area, the company appears to be refining the format rather than redesigning it from scratch.
Air line faces a much harder test
The situation around iPhone Air 3 looks less certain. Digital Chat Station says the model has not even entered the molding stage, which places it much earlier in the development pipeline than the Ultra successor.
Its future reportedly depends on iPhone Air 2 sales. In other words, Apple has not committed fully to a third-generation Air model.
That caution fits the weak performance of the first iPhone Air. Earlier claims from Digital Chat Station said the original model only slightly exceeded 700,000 activations, despite several price cuts.
The impact on the supply chain was also significant. Supplier capacity was reportedly reduced by more than 80% after launch.
The device is now believed to have stopped production entirely. If that is accurate, Apple is likely evaluating the Air concept far more strictly than the foldable Ultra line.
Apple still gives Air 2 one more chance
Even with that backdrop, Apple is still moving ahead with iPhone Air 2. The model is targeted for launch in the first quarter of 2027.
It is also expected to bring a second rear camera and a larger display. Those upgrades suggest Apple is still searching for a formula that better fits its ultra-thin phone concept.
Yet the margin for error appears small. The performance of Air 2 is said to be the key factor in deciding whether the line continues or ends there.
If demand does not improve, the ultra-thin iPhone Air series could be cut entirely, leaving iPhone Air 3 in a holding pattern rather than a clearly active project.
Two experimental paths, two very different outcomes
The latest information paints a sharp divide inside Apple’s future lineup. The company is already preparing a successor for its foldable phone before the first one officially ships.
At the same time, the ultra-thin Air family is fighting to prove it can attract enough buyers to survive beyond the second generation.
That contrast shows where Apple may be placing its confidence. Foldables appear to have a more stable development path, while the ultra-thin concept still has to justify its place in the lineup.
For now, iPhone Ultra 2 looks like a project with clear internal direction, even if its technology remains close to the first model. iPhone Air 3, meanwhile, remains uncertain and heavily dependent on whether iPhone Air 2 can deliver a stronger result.
