For the first time in the major leagues, two players named Max Muncy faced each other in the same game, at the same position, and in the same batting slot. The Athletics and Dodgers opened their series in West Sacramento with both infielders batting seventh and playing third base, turning a familiar name into an unusually exact matchup.
It is only the third time since 1901 that two players with the same name have met under those exact conditions. The last example came in June 2000, when Alex Gonzalez and Álex González both hit seventh and started at shortstop for the Blue Jays and Marlins in the same series, according to www.mlb.com.
A Meeting Long in the Making
For the younger Max Muncy, the matchup carried a personal history that went back to childhood. He learned about the older Muncy through his grandparents when he was around 8 years old and later followed his path from college to the professional ranks.
“When he was in college at Baylor, my grandparents found him and they’re like, ‘Oh, there’s another baseball player,’” Muncy said last week on A’s Cast. “I knew when he got drafted. I knew when he was with the A’s. I knew when they let him go and the Dodgers picked him up. All the transactions, I had known because every time I went over to my grandparents’ house they would keep me updated.”
The two Max Muncys are unrelated, share the same Aug. 25 birthday, and were born exactly 12 years apart. The A’s Muncy made the Opening Day roster in 2025 and had hoped to see the Dodgers’ Muncy last season in May, but he went on the injured list shortly before that series at Dodger Stadium.
Before The Big-League First
Monday night was their first meeting in the majors, but not their first professional encounter. That came in August 2024, when the A’s Muncy was with Triple-A Las Vegas and the Dodgers’ Muncy was on a rehab assignment with Triple-A Oklahoma City.
The younger Muncy had the stronger night then, collecting four hits with two doubles. The two also took a photo before the game and later crossed paths at a nearby restaurant after it ended.
| Player | Team/Level | Shared Details |
|---|---|---|
| Max Muncy, Athletics | Major League Baseball; previously Triple-A Las Vegas | Batting seventh, playing third base; born Aug. 25 |

“He kind of did more of the talking,” the younger Muncy said. “I was like, ‘Nice to meet you. Glad we finally did this.’ He just kind of was like, ‘Hey man, you’ve had a great start to your career. You’re doing good stuff. I wish you the best.’ It was kind of just mutual. … We’re somehow attached in some way. It feels like there’s an attachment. This was before I debuted. He was like, ‘Man, I hope you make it up. Good luck.’”
The matchup gave the series opener an odd symmetry that baseball rarely produces. Two unrelated players with the same name, same birthday, same position, and same spot in the lineup finally met on a big-league field, and the moment lived up to the label of Maximum Muncy.
