Ruben Amorim has wasted no time making an impact at AC Milan, and his first major move has already set a club record. The Rossoneri confirmed the signing of Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain for €74 million ($84 million), the most expensive transfer in the club’s history.
The deal breaks the previous Milan record set in 2019, when Rafael Leão arrived from Lille for €49.5 million ($56.5 million). Leão has also indicated that he wants to begin a new chapter away from Italy, which adds another layer of uncertainty around Milan’s forward line.
Amorim Gets the Striker He Wanted
Ramos has signed through June 2031 and will lead Milan’s attack after joining while representing Portugal at the 2026 World Cup. The move gives Amorim a proven forward to build around as he looks to reshape a team that badly needs a reset.
At PSG, Ramos scored 45 goals in 131 appearances and helped the club win three Ligue 1 titles and two Champions League titles, among other honors. He struggled to secure consistent minutes because of the competition in a stacked attack, but Milan now offers him a much bigger role.
| Player | Transfer Fee | Previous Club | Contract |
|---|---|---|---|
| Gonçalo Ramos | €74 million ($84 million) | Paris Saint-Germain | Through June 2031 |
| Rafael Leão | €49.5 million ($56.5 million) | Lille | Not stated |
Milan Need Goals After Another Flat Season
Milan’s push for Ramos comes after another disappointing campaign that cost Massimiliano Allegri, Igli Tare, Giorgio Furlani and Geoffrey Moncada their jobs. The club finished fifth in Serie A and missed out on Champions League qualification on the final day after a 2–1 defeat to Cagliari.
That result leaves Milan in the Europa League next season, a step below the standard the club expects. The biggest issue was inconsistency in attack, with Christian Pulisic failing to score in 2026, Leão managing only four goals since the calendar turned, and Christopher Nkunku ending the season with eight.
A First Signing That Could Lead to More
Ramos is the first signing of Amorim’s era at Milan, and reports had suggested the new coach could also try to bring players from Old Trafford with him. Italian journalist Antonio Vitiello has said Amorim is “crazy” about Lisandro Martínez and Sporting Lisbon’s Gonçalo Inacio, and talks have already started.
Martínez has one year left on his Manchester United contract and could become a free agent next summer if no extension is triggered. His time at Old Trafford has been heavily affected by injuries, including an ACL problem in 2024–25, though he remains important to Michael Carrick’s defense when fit.
That makes Martínez one of the more watchable names in this early transfer phase, especially with Amorim now in charge of Milan and looking for ways to strengthen further. Whether Milan turn to United next or keep building around Ramos, the record signing has already changed the tone around the club’s summer.
