PlayStation’s Disc Era Is Ending, New Games Go Digital Only From January 2028

PlayStation is drawing a clear line under physical discs for new releases. Starting in January 2028, physical game disc production for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued.

That means new titles will arrive on PlayStation Store and at retailers in digital formats only. The change does not affect games that have already been released, or games that will be released in disc format before January 2028.

What Sony says is driving the shift

In a post on blog.playstation.com, Sony Interactive Entertainment said the move reflects the broader shift in consumer preferences and the wider entertainment industry away from physical discs and toward digital media. The company added that digital access now outpaces physical discs by a significant margin.

Sony said the transition will let it align more closely with how most of its community prefers to access and play games today. The company also said it will continue to prioritize resources toward innovation in how players access games and where they choose to buy them.

What this means for players

The practical result is straightforward: future PlayStation games will still be available, but the disc version will no longer be part of the launch plan once January 2028 arrives. Players who still prefer physical copies will have a limited window before that cutoff for new disc-based releases.

Sony also said it remains committed to delivering a world-class gaming experience and thanked fans for their continued support. The announcement comes alongside separate updates for PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita, which the company highlighted in the same post.
