Nuggets Eye EuroLeague Defensive Star, and a July 15 Deadline Looms

Denver’s offseason may not be done yet, and the next move could come from Europe rather than the NBA market. According to BasketNews and Donatas Urbonas, the Nuggets are showing strong interest in Alpha Diallo, one of the top defensive players outside the league.

The timing matters because Diallo’s NBA exit clause is reportedly active only through July 15. He recently signed a multiyear deal with Dubai Basketball, so any NBA pursuit has a narrow window to turn into something real.

Why Diallo Is On Denver’s Radar

Diallo, 29, just completed the best EuroLeague season of his career with AS Monaco. He was named the league’s Best Defensive Player after averaging 11.9 points, 4.4 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 1.4 steals.

BasketNews also reported that Synergy Sports graded him as “excellent” in several defensive areas, including overall defensive possessions and one-on-one defense. That profile fits what Denver has valued around Nikola Jokic for years.

The Nuggets have repeatedly looked for wings who can guard multiple positions, create turnovers and take on the toughest assignments without disrupting the offense. Diallo is not known as a high-volume scorer, but his defensive versatility and willingness to play within a system could make him useful depth.

What Denver May Be Looking For

Denver has spent much of the offseason trying to strengthen the supporting cast around Jokic while keeping financial flexibility intact. An experienced European veteran would be a relatively low-risk addition compared with many free-agent options.

At 29, Diallo would arrive with years of high-level international experience rather than the profile of a developmental prospect. That is part of the appeal for a team that has often valued dependable role players who understand their jobs and fit cleanly beside its star center.

The reported interest is still just interest for now, but the deadline gives the story extra urgency. If Diallo does not exercise the NBA opt-out by July 15, he would remain with Dubai Basketball under his current contract.

For the Nuggets, that means the window to act may be short, and the decision could come down to whether Diallo sees an NBA opportunity as worth leaving a secure situation in Europe.
