Apple’s next iPhone lineup is shaping up to be a familiar September launch with a less familiar problem for buyers: higher prices. The iPhone 18 family is still months away, but the strongest rumors already point to a lineup that keeps Apple’s usual cadence while adding cost pressure, camera upgrades, and a few design changes.
The biggest immediate question is not whether Apple will launch new phones, but how much more they will cost. Tim Cook has already warned that “price increases are unavoidable,” and the Wall Street Journal reported that memory chip components in the iPhone 18 Pro may cost Apple $150 more than those in the iPhone 17 Pro.
| Rumored iPhone 18 Models | What’s Expected | Notable Detail |
|---|---|---|
| iPhone 18 | Base model | May get 12GB RAM and a smaller camera bump |
| iPhone 18 Pro | Premium model | Expected to see major camera upgrades and a higher price |
| iPhone 18 Pro Max | Largest premium model | Rumored to get a larger battery and a bit more bulk |
| iPhone Fold Ultra | Rumored foldable | May be announced alongside the standard lineup |
September still looks like the target
Apple has long used September for its main iPhone event, and there is little reason to expect that pattern to change in 2026. The company is also expected to have new CEO John Ternus on stage, with his term officially beginning Sept. 1.
Pricing is where the story gets more uncomfortable for buyers. The Wall Street Journal estimated that the iPhone 18 Pro could land at $1,299, which would be about $200 more than last year’s model.
Design changes may be subtle, but visible
Apple has not shown off the lineup officially yet, so every design rumor still comes with caution. Even so, the broad picture suggests refinement rather than a full redesign, with reports pointing to the same general display sizes as last year.
Display quality may still get a boost. Leaker Instant Digital said Apple’s brightness demands are unusually high this year, which has fueled expectations for brighter screens across the lineup.
The base iPhone 18 may also get a smaller camera bump, and there are reports of a slightly redesigned Dynamic Island with a smaller pill-shaped cutout. One leaked image even claims to show an iPhone 18 Pro with a downsized Dynamic Island, though that remains unconfirmed.
Color rumors have also started to firm up for the iPhone 18 Pro. MacWorld reported a lineup of silver, gray, light blue, and a “dark cherry” finish, which appears to match earlier talk of a deep red option.
Hardware changes look more substantial inside the phone
Software is already taking shape around iOS 27, which is expected to arrive at WWDC 2026. On the hardware side, the iPhone 18 lineup is widely expected to move to 12GB of RAM across all models, bringing the base version in line with the Pro models.
Apple is also expected to use A20 and A20 Pro chips for the base and Pro models, respectively. Other rumored upgrades include a new C2 modem for better cellular connectivity, possible 5G satellite support, and a new N2 chip for improved WiFi performance.
Camera and battery rumors point to the biggest gains
The iPhone 18 Pro is drawing the most attention from leakers because of its camera system. Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said it could receive “some of the biggest camera hardware upgrades in the lineup’s history,” and one of the most talked-about changes is a variable aperture.
That feature, first reported by Digital Chat Station on Weibo, would let the camera capture different amounts of light depending on the scene. It could also make portrait-style bokeh look more natural because the effect would be created in-camera rather than mostly through software.
Battery changes may also be significant. Digital Chat Station reported that iPhone 18 Pro batteries could exceed 5,000mAh, while separate reports from China say the iPhone 18 Pro Max will get a larger battery and become slightly thicker and heavier as a result.
Those changes are not dramatic on paper, but they are still noticeable. Reports suggest the Pro Max could be about a quarter of a millimeter thicker and 7 grams heavier, which may matter to anyone already sensitive to the weight of Apple’s largest phone.
The wider Apple rumor mill is also circling the company’s long-promised AI Siri overhaul. Apple has said the smarter Siri experience will understand what is on the screen and be powered by Gemini, but the company also has tried to downplay any idea that Siri will act like a companion.
That means the iPhone 18 may arrive as the kind of update Apple often prefers: familiar at first glance, but meaningfully different once the hardware, camera system, and internal components are broken down. For anyone waiting on a major leap, the Pro models appear to be where most of the action will be.
