The film was directed by Travis Knight and had spent 18 years in development with Escape Artists. Its box-office performance did not match its reported production cost, despite improving on the earlier 1987 feature adaptation starring Dolph Lundgren as He-Man and Frank Langella as Skeletor.

Nicholas Galitzine stars as Prince Adam, a character separated from Eternia before the Sword of Power leads him home. To protect his family and world, Adam must work with Teela and Duncan, also known as Man-At-Arms.
Camila Mendes plays Teela, while Idris Elba portrays Duncan/Man-At-Arms. Jared Leto takes on the role of Skeletor, the ruler threatening Eternia.
