Son and Bouanga Are Rolling, but Diego Luna’s RSL Bring a One-Point Threat

LAFC host Real Salt Lake at BMO Stadium on Wednesday evening with only one point separating the Western Conference contenders. The match puts LAFC’s in-form attack against an RSL side that has kept pace with the league’s best teams.

The Black & Gold enter after a commanding 3-0 El Tráfico victory over LA Galaxy, while Real Salt Lake arrive unbeaten in three matches. Son Heung-Min, Denis Bouanga and Diego Luna give the midweek meeting a star-powered edge.

LAFC made a statement in their first match after the 2026 FIFA World Cup pause, winning 3-0 at Dignity Health Sports Park. Mark Delgado scored against his former club before Bouanga and Son added goals.

Bouanga extended an exceptional El Tráfico record with a goal in his seventh consecutive match against the Galaxy. He is the only player in the rivalry’s history to score in seven straight meetings, according to www.mlssoccer.com.

Son’s finish was his first goal of the 2026 MLS campaign, and he also owns a joint league-leading nine assists. The South Korean star and Bouanga previously made history during LAFC’s run to the Western Conference Semifinals last season.

LAFC also bring a formidable defensive record into the contest. Hugo Lloris recorded his MLS-best ninth clean sheet of the season against LA Galaxy.

RSL’s Young Core Faces a Major Test

Real Salt Lake were held to a 1-1 draw at Minnesota United FC in their last match before the World Cup break. Zach Booth opened the scoring, but RSL conceded in second-half stoppage time.

Head coach Pablo Mastroeni’s side nevertheless enters the fixture unbeaten in three and has shown it can compete with elite opposition. Zavier Gozo, Luna and Sergi Solans have been central figures in a season that has placed RSL near the top of the conference.

Gozo has six goals and five assists in his breakout campaign, earning his first MLS All-Star selection. The homegrown player has also drawn reported transfer interest from clubs in Europe’s top-five leagues.

Luna arrives with added motivation after being left out of the USMNT’s World Cup squad. RSL will look to their “Moon Man” to turn that disappointment into momentum for an MLS Cup push.

Juan Manuel Sanabria provides another important element on the left side after appearing in all three of Uruguay’s World Cup group-stage matches. With reported overseas interest surrounding both Gozo and Luna, RSL’s current window could carry added urgency.

Momentum Meets Opportunity

LAFC have earned nearly 60% of the market ahead of the match, compared with about 20% for RSL, as of Tuesday, July 21 at 9:30 a.m. ET. The figures reflect LAFC’s post-break momentum, but the standings show how little separates the two clubs.

For LAFC, another win would reinforce their MLS Cup credentials behind Bouanga, Son and Lloris. For Real Salt Lake, a result at BMO Stadium would underline that their young core is ready to challenge the Western Conference’s established contenders.
