Florida State University announced that head coach Mike Norvell will remain at the helm for the 2026 season, signaling a commitment to stability amid recent performance challenges. The decision comes after a 21-11 loss to NC State, which left the Seminoles with a 5-6 record and facing a must-win game against Florida to achieve bowl eligibility.
Norvell, entering his seventh season, has faced mounting scrutiny following a difficult stretch where Florida State posted a 7-16 record over two seasons, including a 3-13 mark within the ACC and a winless road record. Despite these struggles, Norvell led the team to an ACC championship in 2023 and maintains optimism about the program’s future.
University leadership, including president Richard McCullough, athletic director Michael Alford, and board chairman Peter Collins, expressed unified support for Norvell while emphasizing the need for structural changes. McCullough stated, “Coach Norvell embraces our support in that process and agrees that success must be achieved.”
Plans to improve Florida State’s prospects include enhancing recruiting efforts and restructuring personnel management to better support the coaching staff. Sources indicate these steps aim to provide Norvell with the resources needed to compete at a higher level within college football’s evolving landscape.
Financial considerations also influenced the decision to retain Norvell. Terminating his contract early would have cost the university approximately $54 million in buyout fees, with additional obligations to staff raising the total to about $72 million.
Under Norvell’s leadership, Florida State has shown offensive improvement, jumping from 132nd nationally last year to eighth this season. The team’s offensive progress is notable, as they have outgained opponents in ten games despite recent setbacks.
Norvell acknowledged the team’s underperformance, stating, “We’re not even close to living up to expectations.” He underscored his commitment to the program, asserting that the focus is on acquiring and retaining elite players and building sustainable success.
Key young talents, including freshmen Mandrell, Darryll Desir, Ousmane Kromah, Jayvan Boggs, and Micahi Danzy, remain on the roster, giving Florida State hope for revitalizing its trajectory in upcoming seasons.
