ESPN Launches New Data-Driven Monday Night Football Stream With Enhanced Features

ESPN is launching a new data-rich Monday Night Football broadcast next week that offers fans a unique viewing experience. The alternate telecast, named MNF Playbook with Next Gen Stats, features a live feed from an All-22 camera angle, showing the entire field with detailed on-screen analytics and commentary.

This innovative show is developed in partnership with sports data analytics company Adrenaline. They use an AI model trained on hundreds of thousands of NFL plays to predict key metrics such as run-pass probabilities and blitz likelihoods.

According to ESPN producer Andy Jacobson, the data updates dynamically in real time. He explains, "You’ll see that on the screen as we’ve created augmented reality graphics that are embedded onto the field and constantly updating up until the snap."

ESPN’s approach includes expert analysis from former NFL players like Luke Kuechly, Chase Daniel, and Tim Hasselbeck. They will provide insights throughout the game, enhancing viewers’ understanding alongside the advanced visuals.

MNF Playbook will be available on ESPN2 and the ESPN app for Unlimited subscribers on December 22nd and 29th. After those dates, the alternate stream will only air on the ESPN app for Week 18 and during the Wild Card and Divisional playoff rounds.

While Amazon Prime Video has introduced AI overlays for its Thursday Night Football streams, ESPN aims for a more forward-thinking presentation. Jacobson emphasizes that their concept helps viewers see and understand the game in a completely new way alongside live commentary.
