Decades-Long Scheduling Quirk Returns for Packers in Upcoming NFL Matchup

The Green Bay Packers are set to face a rare scheduling scenario, meeting their longtime rivals, the Chicago Bears, twice in just 13 days. This type of scheduling quirk has not occurred for the Packers in four decades, harkening back to a similar setup in the mid-1980s.

In December of that year, the two teams clashed on a Monday night in Chicago, followed by a rematch less than two weeks later at Lambeau Field. The Bears won both games, with William “The Refrigerator” Perry making significant plays in each matchup. Now, the Packers and Bears prepare for a similarly compressed rematch on a Saturday night at Soldier Field.

Packers head coach Matt LaFleur acknowledges the advantage of recent film study. “There’s less to comb through,” he said. “You already did it one time…you definitely go back and look at some of the stuff, but there’s just not as much that we haven’t seen.” Meanwhile, players understand the need for adaptability since repeating the same strategies would be ineffective.

Safety Xavier McKinney emphasized the challenge, stating, “You cannot just go into the game thinking they’re going to do exactly the same things.” He added that while many elements may be similar, both teams will mix in new plays from other recent games. Running back Josh Jacobs also highlighted the strategic battle, describing the situation as a “chess match” where both sides aim to outthink each other.

The magnitude of playing a division opponent twice in such a short time frame is notable. Cornerback Keisean Nixon commented, “It’s hard to beat a team twice regardless, especially in the division.” The history of the Packers facing the same opponent twice within three weeks is limited, with the last occurrence before this being in the late 1990s.

Roster changes will add complexity to this rematch. The Bears will be without two key receivers, while linebacker Tremaine Edmunds returns from injured reserve. The Packers will have to adjust without linebacker Micah Parsons, noted Bears coach Ben Johnson, who stressed the need for preparation and in-game adjustments.

Quarterback Jordan Love’s recent performance, where he threw three long touchdown passes against Chicago, has put the Packers in first place in the NFC North division. To maintain that lead, the Packers will have to execute another strong performance in this unprecedented short turnaround rematch.
