NBA Team Expresses Strong Interest in a 6’10” High-Scoring Forward Prospect

The Golden State Warriors are reportedly interested in acquiring Brooklyn Nets forward Michael Porter Jr., according to Evan Sidery of Forbes. The Milwaukee Bucks and Detroit Pistons have also expressed interest in the 6’10” scoring wing.

Porter is having an outstanding season, averaging 25.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game. He boasts a 49.1 percent shooting percentage from the field and 40.1 percent from beyond the arc, resulting in an effective field-goal percentage of 59.0—slightly higher than Stephen Curry’s 58.7.

Porter’s contract pays him $38.3 million this season and $40.8 million next season, making him one of the most expensive trade targets available. Despite the price, Porter’s skills fit well with the Warriors’ style of play.

Steve Kerr’s offense suits Porter’s ability to shoot off movement and cut to the basket. His offensive play style is often compared to Klay Thompson’s. Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler are known for creating high-quality shot opportunities, which Porter can effectively capitalize on.

Golden State’s offense needs Porter badly, ranking 29th in points in the paint per game with just 42.5 points. Only three Warriors players average more than 4.0 points in the paint per game, and one of them, Jonathan Kuminga, is barely in the rotation. If a trade happens, the Nets would likely not want Draymond Green as they focus on rebuilding. A potential deal could start with Jonathan Kuminga and Moses Moody, who have the fourth- and fifth-largest contracts on Golden State’s roster. Only Buddy Hield and Al Horford have salaries high enough to complete the trade.

The Nets would prefer Al Horford, but the Warriors would likely insist on including Buddy Hield for salary and roster flexibility reasons. A proposed trade scenario could be:

Trading two first-round picks is a significant cost, especially with Curry, Butler, Porter, and Green under contract for the following season. However, the Nets are not in a rush to trade Porter and may wait for an offer of this caliber.

The trade market might require the Warriors to pay more than initially preferred. If Trey Murphy III remains untouchable, Porter could be the top wing scorer available. With the Clippers potentially retaining Ivica Zubac, Porter stands out as the best available player under a $40 million salary.
