SpaceX has postponed the launch of the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation mission from Vandenberg Space Force Base until Sunday evening. The delay is due to a technical issue with the ground system equipment, which teams need to troubleshoot before proceeding.
The new launch window is set for 6:08 p.m. Sunday from Space Launch Complex-4 on South Base. Both the Falcon 9 rocket and its Italian payload remain in good condition amid the delay, according to SpaceX representatives.
This mission will place the COSMO-SkyMed Second Generation FM satellite into low-Earth orbit. The satellite supports the Italian Space Agency and the Italian Ministry of Defence by providing advanced Earth observation capabilities.
Weather was also a concern earlier on Saturday, with SpaceX monitoring windy conditions that could interfere with liftoff. However, the primary cause for the delay was the ground equipment glitch, not the weather.
The rocket’s first-stage booster will make its 21st flight and return to Vandenberg to land about eight minutes after liftoff. This touchdown may produce sonic booms audible in nearby counties such as Santa Barbara, Ventura, and San Luis Obispo, depending on atmospheric conditions.
For those interested in viewing the launch in person, several vantage points near Lompoc Valley offer clear views of the launch pad. Recommended spots include the peak of Harris Grade Road and areas around Vandenberg Village, specifically near Moonglow and Stardust roads.
