Autopsy findings reveal the harrowing final moments of Xana Kernodle, one of four University of Idaho students brutally murdered by Bryan Kohberger after he broke into their off-campus residence. According to a recently unsealed court filing obtained by PEOPLE, Kernodle was not asleep as three of the other victims were when attacked. Instead, evidence shows she was awake and responded to alarming noises by investigating, which ultimately led to a deadly confrontation with Kohberger.

Traces of blood from two victims, Mogen and Kaylee Goncalves, were found at key locations within the home—including Mogen’s bedroom door, the stairwell, and walls near Kernodle’s room—suggesting Kernodle encountered the aftermath of the initial killings. Autopsy reports show evidence of close contact between the two during the final moments; Kernodle’s DNA was discovered under Chapin’s fingernails, while Chapin’s DNA was found under both of Kernodle’s nails.
