Tom Daley, a five-time Olympic diving medalist, has extended his creative talents beyond the pool by designing knitted scarves and hats for Great Britain’s flagbearers at the 2026 Winter Olympics Opening Ceremony. This collaboration with British fashion brand Ben Sherman marks Daley’s unique contribution to the Winter Games, complementing his longstanding reputation as both an elite athlete and a passionate knitter.
Daley has competed in five Summer Olympics since the age of 14, recently serving as the flagbearer for Team GB at the Paris Games. For the 2026 Winter Olympics in Milan and Cortina d’Ampezzo, he crafted accessories that incorporate bold “GB” lettering and cable-knit patterns inspired by the snowy landscapes of northern Italy. These handmade items symbolize more than style; Daley emphasized that each stitch represents the dedication and achievement of the athletes leading Team GB onto the global stage.
Ben Sherman has outfitted Team GB for four consecutive Olympics. This year, Daley’s designs feature as the official scarves and hats worn by the flagbearers during both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Alongside these knits, Ben Sherman is offering other Team GB ceremony apparels, including a wool-blend knitted zip sweater and a crewneck jumper adorned with Union Flag motifs. The retail versions of Daley’s hat and scarf have already sold out, reflecting strong public interest.
Daley’s involvement reflects a blending of his athletic experience with his well-known passion for knitting. He said in a statement: “It’s more than carrying a flag; it’s carrying the stories, hopes, and identity of everyone who made that journey with you.” This project draws on his deep connection to representing Great Britain, adding a personal and cultural dimension to the ceremonial attire.
Notably, royal figures such as Princess Anne and Sir Timothy Laurence were seen wearing Team GB scarves at the event, though it remains unclear whether those were knitted by Daley. His knitting skill has also been showcased publicly, including moments captured during diving events at recent Olympic competitions.
The 2026 Winter Olympics will run from February 6 to February 22 in the Italian hosts’ cities. The Paralympic Games will follow from March 6 to March 15. Daley’s contribution brings a fresh and heartfelt cultural touch to Team GB’s presentation on this international winter sporting stage.
