The nationally-ranked Furman women’s tennis team secured a decisive victory over Belmont on Saturday at the Paladins’ Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, South Carolina. Belmont was swept in the match, struggling to gain traction after conceding the doubles point early.

Furman jumped ahead with strong performances in doubles, winning the top position 6-1 and the second doubles 6-2. Belmont’s senior Libbie Hamilton and freshman Ketevan Jeladze were trailing 4-2 in the third doubles match, signaling a dominant showing by the Paladins. Furman’s doubles duo of Lillie Murphy and Elle Warren currently hold the 34th spot nationally in the ITA rankings, underscoring their elite status.

In singles play, Furman maintained control with straight-set victories on all six courts. Belmont’s redshirt freshman Savannah Webster managed to claim the most game wins for her team, falling 6-1, 6-3 at the top singles spot against Elle Warren. Despite spirited efforts from Belmont, no other players managed to win more than four combined games in their singles matchups.

This loss leaves Belmont with a 1-9 record, while Furman improves to 7-3, solidifying its reputation as one of the nation’s more formidable programs. Though the Bruins were unable to break through this time, the experience of facing a top-ranked opponent offers valuable lessons for the season.

Looking ahead, Belmont will host nearby rival Lipscomb at the Beaman Family Tennis Complex in Nashville after an eight-day break. The match is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve, promising a competitive atmosphere as the Bruins seek to rebound on home turf.
