Kingpin Wants Spider-Man on Screen, The Rights Battle Still Stands in the Way

Vincent D’Onofrio has renewed interest in a possible live-action clash between Kingpin and Spider-Man, but he says the obstacle is not creative appetite. It is the complex rights arrangement that still separates Marvel and Sony.

D’Onofrio made the point after a fan asked for a showdown between the two characters on social media. He replied that if Marvel and Sony ever “get their sh*t together,” a crossover might happen, adding that it is “a complicated rights issue.”

Why the crossover remains difficult

The core problem is ownership, not popularity. Sony controls the film rights to Spider-Man, while Marvel and Disney use Kingpin as part of their own character roster.

That setup has created a long-running split in how the characters can appear on screen. Sony can let Spider-Man appear in Marvel projects, as seen in films such as “Avengers: Infinity War,” but a direct Spider-Man and Kingpin matchup in a Marvel-led live-action film still depends on studio agreements.

A villain already tied to Spider-Man lore

Kingpin and Spider-Man are not strangers in the broader Marvel universe. They have appeared together on screen before, but only in the animated film “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” where Liev Schreiber voiced Wilson Fisk and faced Miles Morales.

That history helps explain why fans continue to ask for a live-action version. The character dynamic is a natural one for the screen, especially because Kingpin is one of Spider-Man’s best-known enemies in the comics.

D’Onofrio’s role keeps the conversation alive

D’Onofrio recently returned as Wilson Fisk in the new season of “Daredevil: Born Again,” which premiered on Disney+ on Tuesday night. In the series, Fisk has become mayor of New York City and is driving civil unrest through an aggressive Anti-Vigilante Task Force.

The performance has kept Kingpin in the center of Marvel discussion. That visibility has also fueled speculation about whether the character could eventually expand beyond Daredevil stories and into a Spider-Man movie if the studios agree.

What is next for Spider-Man on film

The next Spider-Man feature, “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” is set to arrive in theaters on July 31. The film stars Tom Holland, Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, Jon Bernthal and Mark Ruffalo, with Destin Daniel Cretton directing and Chris McKenna and Erik Sommers writing.

The story follows the events of “No Way Home,” when the world forgot that Peter Parker is Spider-Man. Sony’s trailer for “Brand New Day” quickly drew massive attention after its release on March 17, crossing 1 billion views in just four days and becoming the first movie trailer to reach that mark.

What the rights issue means in practice

  1. Sony controls Spider-Man’s film side, which limits how the character can be used outside its agreements.
  2. Marvel can use Kingpin in Disney projects, including “Daredevil: Born Again.”
  3. A live-action Spider-Man and Kingpin meeting requires coordination between both studios.
  4. Animated projects have already shown the matchup can work creatively.

For now, the idea remains a fan favorite rather than a confirmed plan, and D’Onofrio’s comments underline how business terms can shape superhero storytelling as much as character demand does.
