Pokémon TCG players can get an early look at the upcoming Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising expansion through Build & Battle Boxes sold at select Play! Pokémon Stores. The early access window begins on May 9, while the full expansion is set to arrive on May 22, giving trainers a chance to test the set before release.
The Prerelease format is designed for fast, limited-deck matches and uses a 40-card deck instead of the standard 60-card format. That shorter setup makes the event attractive for new players and also gives experienced players a practical way to explore new strategies with the next expansion.
What the Build & Battle Box includes
Each Mega Evolution—Chaos Rising Build & Battle Box contains four booster packs, a 40-card ready-to-play deck, and one of four foil promo cards. The promo pool features Delphox, Ampharos, Crobat, and Goodra, each offering a different playstyle for Prerelease battles.
The card selection also helps players build around current and earlier expansion cards, which matters in a limited format. Because the contents are partly random, every box can produce a different deck path and force players to adapt quickly during play.
Why the Prerelease format matters
Prerelease events give players access to the new set before the official launch date and create a more even battlefield for sealed-deck play. With only a limited card pool available, deck construction becomes as important as in-game decisions, especially when the key cards in a box do not line up neatly.
For newer trainers, the format also lowers the barrier to entry. Shorter matches, fewer Prize cards, and smaller decks make the game easier to learn while still preserving the core strategy that defines the Pokémon TCG.
Promo card strategies to watch
- Delphox can pressure opponents with Energized Storm and its damage output grows as more Energy is attached.
- Ampharos rewards hand-size control, with Synchro Pulse and Flashing Bolt able to hit very hard when both players have matching hand sizes.
- Crobat focuses on setup and consistency, with Nighttime Maneuvers helping players stack the next draw.
- Goodra adds disruption and bulk, using Slimy Sliding to limit switching while Dragon Pulse can deal heavy damage.
These promo cards are not just collector pieces. Each one can shape a Prerelease deck differently, so the card pulled from the box can strongly affect matchups and deck-building choices.
How players can join early
Players looking for early access can use the official Event Locator to find a nearby Prerelease event. The program is limited to select Play! Pokémon Stores, so availability may vary by location.
Those who cannot attend a Prerelease event will still be able to buy the Build & Battle Boxes when the expansion launches officially. That makes the product relevant both for competitive testing and for players who want a first look at the new card pool before the set reaches wider availability.
