Mitsubishi is recalling 108,046 vehicles in the United States because of a problem with the liftgate gas spring cylinders, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The issue can cause the gas springs to corrode and lose pressure, which may lead to a rupture or an unexpected drop of the liftgate, increasing the risk of injury.
The recall affects certain Outlander models, including the 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV and the 2014-2020 Outlander. NHTSA said the action expands a previous recall that involved more than 90,000 vehicles in August 2025.
Why the vehicles are being recalled
The concern centers on the liftgate gas spring cylinders, which help support the rear hatch. If those cylinders corrode and weaken, the liftgate can become unsafe to use and may fall without warning.
That risk makes the problem more than a simple hardware defect. It creates a possible injury hazard for anyone opening or standing near the rear of the vehicle.
Which Mitsubishi vehicles are included
The recall covers 108,046 vehicles in total. The affected models listed in the notice are the following:
- 2018-2022 Outlander PHEV
- 2014-2020 Outlander
Mitsubishi said the recall is tied to the left and right liftgate gas springs. The company will replace both parts at no charge to owners.
