Reno reached its first 90-degree day of the year as a burst of early heat pushed temperatures well above normal across the Reno-Tahoe region. The Reno-Tahoe International Airport hit 92 degrees on Sunday, setting a daily record and signaling the start of a short but intense warm spell that forecasters expect to last through Tuesday.

The National Weather Service in Reno said that Sunday was also Reno’s first 90-degree day of 2026. That usually does not happen until around June 7, which makes this warm stretch notably early for the city.

Record heat spreads across the region

South Lake Tahoe also set a daily record on Sunday, reaching 79 degrees and topping the previous mark of 75 degrees set in 2025. The warmer pattern is affecting much of northern Nevada and the Sierra, where highs are running far above seasonal norms.

Forecasters said temperatures in northwestern Nevada valleys are expected to climb into the upper 80s and middle 90s through Tuesday. That puts many locations about 15 to 20 degrees above average for this time of year.

Heat risk remains in place through Tuesday

The Weather Service said the region faces minor to moderate heat risk through Tuesday, with the greatest concern at lower elevations. Officials urged people with outdoor plans to take basic precautions during the hottest part of the day.

“Please remember to stay hydrated and limit exposure to the sun during the warmest parts of the day,” forecasters said in the area forecast discussion Monday morning. The guidance is especially important for people who are sensitive to heat.

More records could fall before the cooldown

Some daily records may still be tied or broken before the pattern changes. Reno could reach 90 degrees Monday and 89 degrees Tuesday, while South Lake Tahoe could match or exceed 78 degrees Monday and 79 degrees Tuesday.

Dry weather is expected to continue early in the week, but isolated thunderstorms could develop Tuesday afternoon in parts of western Nevada. Some of those storms could bring strong wind gusts above 50 mph.

Breezy conditions and cooler weather later in the week

A shift begins by midweek as a weather system moves into the area. Reno is expected to cool into the 70s and lower 80s on Wednesday and Thursday, with breezy conditions and a slight chance of showers.

The Reno forecast calls for mostly sunny weather Monday with a high near 91, followed by a sunny Tuesday near 90 and windy conditions with gusts up to 35 mph. By Wednesday, temperatures are expected to fall sharply to around 77 with stronger winds and a slight chance of late showers.

Tahoe is also expected to trend cooler after the early-week heat. Monday brings sunny weather with highs around 84 at the lake and 74 at higher elevations, while Wednesday should drop into the low 70s at the lake and low 60s at higher elevations with gustier winds and a chance of overnight showers.
