Investigators from Maine’s Office of State Fire Marshal have joined forces with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives National Response Team at the Searsmont fire scene. The joint effort is focused on determining the origin and cause of the fire and the explosion that followed.
Officials said the case requires a detailed and methodical review because of its impact on victims, families, Robbins Lumber employees, and the wider community. The state fire marshal’s office said ATF is the only federal agency assigned to fire investigation, which is why the specialized federal team was requested to support the work.
Scene work expected to continue
Authorities said operations at the site may continue through the week. While investigators remain there, the scene will stay secured and the Office of the State Fire Marshal will not conduct in-person media interviews.
Updates are expected to be released through the Department of Public Safety and the Office of State Fire Marshal as available. Officials did not indicate that the investigation had reached a final finding, and the cause remains under review.
Specialized federal support at the site
The ATF National Response Team brought in personnel and technical resources for the investigation. Those resources include forensic scientists, electrical engineers, computer modeling experts, and additional fire investigators to help examine the complex scene.
The state fire marshal’s office said the goal is to provide Maine with a thorough and professional investigation. That work is being carried out in coordination with federal specialists to assess both how the fire started and how the explosion developed.
Patients remain under close watch
Officials also said they continue to monitor patients receiving care at hospitals across New England, with many still in critical condition. The announcement extended concern to those patients, their families, and everyone affected by the tragedy.
The state fire marshal’s office thanked medical teams at MaineHealth Waldo Hospital, MaineHealth Pen Bay Hospital, Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center, LifeFlight of Maine, Massachusetts General Hospital, and other healthcare workers across the region. Their immediate response and continuing care have been part of the broader emergency effort surrounding the Searsmont scene.
