MediaTek says the next big shift in smartphones will not be another flashy AI demo, but real-time features that matter in everyday use. The company believes current on-device AI is still at an early stage, with far more practical applications still ahead. That outlook reflects a broader change in the industry, where AI is moving from isolated tools such as image generation and text summaries toward deeper integration with core phone functions. In that model, AI is expected to work more quietly in the background while delivering benefits users can feel immediately. AI Is Becoming A Core Phone Capability Anuj Sidharth, Director Marketing & Communication MediaTek India & Southeast Asia, said the company continues to advance its Dimensity chipset lineup to support that direction. The development effort covers GPU performance, camera and video processing, and the Neural Processing Unit, or NPU, which handles AI workloads on the device. According to Sidharth, the turning point will come when AI processing happens in real time on the smartphone itself. At that stage, AI would no longer be seen as a side feature, but as a tool that can actively support daily activity. The company also sees gaming as a major battleground, especially as mobile hardware gets closer to the visual quality associated with larger computing platforms. Ray tracing is one example MediaTek points to as a major shift. The technology, once strongly associated with PCs, is increasingly arriving on smartphones and can produce more realistic light, shadow, and reflection effects in games. That matters because chipset competition is no longer limited to raw speed. It is also about how immersive the overall experience feels, especially for users who want premium graphics in a portable device. Connectivity Is Expected To Push Further MediaTek also believes connectivity will remain a major area of innovation. Sidharth described a future in which users could still communicate even when they are in places without cellular coverage. That idea points to a wider definition of smartphone usefulness. Performance still matters, but the ability to stay functional in difficult network conditions may become an even stronger differentiator over time. Not Limited To Smartphones The company says its ambitions extend beyond phones into a broader device ecosystem. MediaTek is also working on technologies for automotive systems, WiFi routers, and smart home devices. Sidharth said the aim is to improve daily life across multiple product categories, not just through smartphones. As AI, connectivity, and visual processing mature in chips, they can become a foundation for devices that work together more effectively. Indonesia Remains An Important Premium Market In Indonesia, MediaTek says its premium Dimensity lineup has been well received, especially the Dimensity 8000 Series and Dimensity 9000 Series. The response suggests local consumers are increasingly open to high-end smartphone experiences, not only midrange devices. Sidharth added that support for the premium Dimensity 8000 and Dimensity 9000 lines has been strong in the market. He also said MediaTek is only at the beginning of this phase, with further innovation still on the way.
