Android Auto is moving toward a more capable role on the dashboard, with changes that go beyond a refreshed interface. Google is preparing a version that is designed to help drivers access navigation, media, calls, and messages with less friction while also making the in-car display feel more personal and more informative.
The update also points to a broader shift in how Android Auto works while a car is parked and while it is in motion. Alongside a new visual style and smarter map guidance, the system is set to bring widgets, video support in parked mode, and deeper Gemini integration into the driving experience.
A fresher dashboard built around Material 3 Expressive
One of the most visible changes will come from Material 3 Expressive. Google plans to give Android Auto more animated visuals, new shapes, dedicated fonts and wallpapers, and richer color schemes.
These changes are meant to make the dashboard look cleaner and more personal. Google Maps is also expected to use more of the screen, which should reduce unused space on some displays and make navigation information easier to read.
Widgets placed directly on the car screen
Android Auto is also preparing support for widgets, bringing small app panels straight to the car display. The idea is similar to widgets on phones and tablets, but adapted for the dashboard.
The confirmed options include shortcuts to favorite contacts, garage door opener apps, weather forecasts, clocks, Google Home controls, and photos. It is not yet clear whether every phone widget will be supported or only selected ones.
Navigation that shows more of the road ahead
Google Maps will not only take up more visual space, but also gain Immersive Navigation. This feature uses a three-dimensional view with an isometric perspective, making overpasses, underpasses, and buildings appear more lifelike on the screen.
The system also adds more road detail. Lane guidance, traffic lights, and stop signs are shown more clearly so drivers can prepare for turns, lane changes, and busy intersections with less guesswork.
Video support arrives while the car is parked
Another major addition is video playback on the dashboard display when the vehicle is stationary. For the first time, content such as YouTube can be played at 1080p 60fps in parked mode.
Once the car starts moving, the system automatically switches video to audio-only playback. This feature is planned to arrive first on selected vehicles from BMW, Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Mercedes-Benz, and Volvo.
Gemini becomes part of the driving interface
Gemini is set to play a larger role in Android Auto, especially for users who already have the AI assistant on their phones. From the dashboard, it can understand conversation context and offer more relevant suggestions.
A highlighted capability is Magic Cue. If someone asks for an address through a message, Gemini can look through SMS, email, or calendar entries and suggest a reply with a single tap.
On newer cars with Android Auto built in, Gemini can go even further. It may explain dashboard symbols, tell drivers the size of the trunk, and assist with real-time navigation by using a connected car camera with Google Maps.
Entertainment apps are also getting attention
The update is not limited to navigation and AI. Music streaming apps that are commonly used in the car, including YouTube Music and Spotify, are also slated for interface updates.
That means Android Auto is being shaped as more than a phone mirror on a car screen. Google is turning it into a more active driving hub, with visuals, map guidance, widgets, entertainment, and AI working together in one place.
