Android Adds Fake Call Detection, Flagging AI Voice Scams Before You Pick Up

Android is adding a new layer of protection aimed at one of the most convincing phone scams now in circulation: AI-generated voice fraud. The feature, called Fake Call Detection, is designed to help users spot calls that sound real even when the number and the voice have both been manipulated.

The threat has become harder to identify because attackers no longer rely on a fake caller ID alone. They can also imitate the voice of a family member, friend, colleague, or manager, making a suspicious call feel routine and familiar.

How the check works in the background

Google built the system to verify calls quietly in the background. When both users are using Phone by Google, their devices exchange confirmation signals to check whether the call really comes from a legitimate contact.

The process uses Rich Communication Services, or RCS, which is protected with end-to-end encryption. If the expected authentication signal does not appear, Android warns that the call may be an attempt at spoofing or identity masking.

That warning is meant to appear early enough to stop the conversation before a user shares personal information or responds to a request. In a scam environment where both the number and the voice can look convincing, the alert gives Android users another chance to pause.

Why the feature matters now

AI-based phone fraud is no longer limited to voice imitation alone. Caller ID spoofing combined with voice cloning can make a scam call seem unusually credible, even to people who are generally cautious.

Google’s approach focuses on interruption rather than detection after the damage is done. By signaling that a call may not be authentic, Android aims to reduce the risk of users handing over data or making a transaction under pressure.

Availability on supported devices

Google says Fake Call Detection will be enabled by default on eligible devices, although users can switch it off in settings. The rollout starts on devices running Android 12 or later.

Pixel phones are the first to receive the update, followed by other Android devices that use Phone by Google. Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, Vivo, Motorola, and other Android brands can gain the same protection by setting Phone by Google as the default calling app.

Part of a wider Android update

Fake Call Detection is one of the main additions in Android’s June 2026 update. Google is also expanding Quick Share to more devices, updating Circle to Search, adding a digital wardrobe in Google Photos, and improving the Personal Safety app.

Together, those changes show a broader effort to tighten user protection while Android-related services continue to adapt to more advanced AI-driven scams. As voice cloning becomes harder to distinguish from ordinary conversation, automatic call verification is becoming an increasingly practical way to help users stay alert.
