China has started operating three high-performance carbon fiber production lines, a move that directly targets one of the country’s key weak points in high-end material supply. The new capacity is expected to strengthen a strategic material base used across advanced industries.
The new lines are run by China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd. through the Lianyungang base of its subsidiary, Zhongfu Shenying Carbon Fiber Co., Ltd., in Jiangsu Province. With the latest launch, the company is broadening both scale and product coverage for domestic supply.
Three product categories, one broader supply plan
The newly launched lines cover three major carbon fiber categories: general-purpose carbon fiber, high-strength carbon fiber, and high-modulus carbon fiber. Together, they show that the expansion is aimed not only at adding volume, but also at filling out the product spectrum.
That wider range matters because different industries need different performance profiles. A broader portfolio gives downstream users more flexibility when selecting materials for specific applications.
| Production line | Capacity | Main focus |
|---|---|---|
| Large-tow carbon fiber | 5,000 tons | Scale production |
| SYT70 T1100 high-strength carbon fiber | 1,000 tons | High-strength segment |
| High-modulus carbon fiber | 600 tons | High-modulus segment |
Why the expansion matters
Carbon fiber is valued for its light weight, high strength, and corrosion resistance. Those properties make it useful in new energy, aerospace, deep-sea applications, deep-Earth projects, deep space, sports equipment, and 3C electronics.
Because so many of those uses sit in high-value industries, domestic production capacity has become more than a manufacturing issue. It is increasingly tied to the reliability of strategic supply chains.
Zhou Yuxian, chairman of CNBM, said the launch is meant to address a structural problem in the market. He said the main issue has been insufficient supply of high-end carbon fiber products and an incomplete product range.
According to Zhou, the new lines will make it possible to cover the full range, from general-purpose products to high-strength and high-modulus materials. That points to an effort to solve both scale and category gaps at the same time.
Built to support advanced manufacturing
Zhongfu Shenying developed the three new lines independently, underscoring the technical side of the project. The setup combines a large-tow line with two specialized lines designed for more demanding performance requirements.
The structure suggests a layered production strategy. One part focuses on volume, while the other parts are aimed at more specialized engineering needs.
Zhou also said the lines should help address common challenges in engineering and mass production of high-end materials. In that sense, the project is meant to do more than expand factory output.
It is also intended to improve the security and resilience of China’s supply of major strategic materials. The Lianyungang base in Jiangsu now plays a larger role in supplying general-purpose, high-strength, and high-modulus carbon fiber at the same time.
