Apple’s next iPhone lineup may be changing more than just its RAM numbers. Reports suggest the company is reshaping memory architecture in the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e to keep devices running smoothly under AI workloads.
According to Ming-Chi Kuo, the two models are expected to ship with 9 GB of RAM rather than 8 GB. The increase is said to come from a 1.5 GB x 6 memory chip configuration, replacing the more traditional 2 GB x 4 setup.
AI performance, not just capacity
The key detail is not only the larger memory pool, but the way Apple is arranging it. That design choice appears aimed at supporting the more demanding tasks tied to Apple’s expanding AI features.
Even so, 9 GB may not be enough for every new capability Apple is preparing. Kuo says the iPhone 18 Pro Max and iPhone Ultra are expected to carry 12 GB of RAM, or 1.5 GB x 8 dies, which he describes as the minimum needed to run all of the updated Siri AI features.

What this means for the regular models
The iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e may end up in an awkward middle position. They would be a clear step up from earlier generations, yet still possibly short of the memory headroom needed to unlock Apple’s full AI package.
That also helps explain why the iPhone 17 is expected to lag behind. Because of memory limitations, the model is thought to miss some of the new features linked to the Siri AI update.
Another important detail is the possible move to the A20 chip in both the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. If that happens, performance gains would come not only from RAM changes, but also from the combination of chipset and memory layout.
The reports are not fully aligned, however. Earlier this month, another leak claimed the iPhone 18 would move up to 12 GB of RAM and match the Pro and Pro Max models, while keeping the same price as the iPhone 17 256 GB.
That version now looks harder to sustain. Tim Cook is said to have effectively confirmed a price increase, and a newer report places the iPhone 18 Pro price close to $1,400.
For now, the most useful takeaway is that Apple appears to be tuning its lower-tier models for AI rather than simply pushing larger RAM figures. Whether 9 GB is enough for the full experience will remain unclear until the phones are officially announced.
Within that uncertainty, the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e are shaping up as a test of how far Apple can stretch AI readiness without moving every model into the same memory class.
