WhatsApp messages that only appear after the app is opened are usually a sign that background access has been restricted. When that happens, the app cannot stay properly connected to its server while the screen is off.
The issue can affect both Android and iPhone devices. In many cases, the problem is not the app itself but a combination of data controls, battery limits, notification settings, and network behavior when the phone is locked.
Background data is the first setting to check
WhatsApp needs background data access to receive messages without being opened manually. If that permission is disabled, new chats often arrive only after the app is launched again.
On Android, users can open Settings, then Apps or App Management, choose WhatsApp, and look for Data Usage or Mobile Data. The Background Data option should be enabled so the app keeps receiving messages in the background.
On iPhone, the equivalent step is to open Settings, find WhatsApp in the app list, and turn on Background App Refresh. That allows the app to update data while it is not on screen.
Battery restrictions can interrupt incoming notifications
Power-saving modes are another common reason messages arrive late. When battery saver features are active, the system may limit background activity to reduce power use.
WhatsApp can usually be exempted through the Battery menu, then Battery Optimization or App Battery Saver. Set the app to Do Not Optimize or No Restrictions so the operating system does not cut its connection.
Notifications inside WhatsApp also need attention
Delayed chat alerts can come from the app’s own notification settings. Message and group notifications should not be muted if the goal is to receive updates immediately.
On Android, users can open WhatsApp, tap the three-dot menu, and enter Notifications. On iPhone, the same type of control is available through Settings inside WhatsApp, where notification tones and alerts can be checked.
The internet connection may drop when the screen sleeps
Some phones are set to turn off Wi-Fi or mobile data once the display enters sleep mode. If the connection breaks at lock screen, WhatsApp cannot maintain a live link to its server.
Users can inspect advanced Wi-Fi settings and make sure Keep Wi-Fi on during sleep is set to Always. That keeps the connection active even when the phone is not being used.
Aggressive app closing can make the problem worse
Force-closing recent apps may also interrupt WhatsApp on certain devices. On several phone brands, including Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo, clearing recent apps can fully stop WhatsApp’s background service.
One practical fix is to use the lock feature in recent apps. That keeps WhatsApp from being removed during memory cleaning, allowing messages to continue coming in without opening the app first.
Third-party tools such as Task Killer or RAM Booster can trigger the same behavior. If those tools are installed, WhatsApp should be added to the exclusion list or removed if they interfere with connectivity.
What to try if the problem still is not solved
If messages still do not arrive, clearing WhatsApp’s cache through Settings can help. It is also worth checking whether the app is running the latest version from the Play Store or the App Store.
Reinstalling the app may be the last step after chats have been backed up to Google Drive or iCloud. That can restore cleaner settings and improve background connection stability.
