Users of older Mac, iPhone, and iPad devices that still rely on Microsoft Office 2019 are about to face a major restriction. Starting July 13, the Mac version of Office 2019 will enter reduced functionality mode, leaving many users unable to edit, save, or create new files.
The change is especially disruptive because it does not fully stop the app from opening documents. Instead, affected users will still be able to view and print files, but core productivity tasks will no longer work as expected.
What is changing
Microsoft says the issue is tied to an expired security certificate used to validate Office licenses. The company has already updated that certificate and adjusted newer Office versions so they can recognize it, but Office 2019 for Mac will not receive a compatible update.
That means the software can remain installed and launch normally, yet its ability to confirm licensing will break once the new certificate rules take effect. Microsoft describes the certificate removal as standard industry practice intended to reduce risk if cryptographic keys are compromised.
| Platform | Status | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Office 2019 for Mac | Reduced functionality mode starting July 13 | Cannot edit, save, or create new files |
| Older iPhone and iPad Office apps | Viewing and printing only | No editing functions |
| Windows Office versions | Not affected | No certificate-related disruption |
Who is affected
The impact is not limited to Office 2019 alone. Microsoft also warned Microsoft 365 customers on Mac who are running supported newer builds, along with Office 2021 non-subscription users, to update before July so they do not run into similar problems.
By contrast, Office versions for Windows are not affected by the certificate issue. Microsoft says the disruption is specific to certain paths within the Mac, iPhone, and iPad ecosystem.
Why the limitation appears now
Office 2019 stopped receiving official support in October 2023, which means it no longer gets software or security updates. Because of that, the product cannot adapt to the new certificate path even though Microsoft has already refreshed the certificate itself.
A Microsoft spokesperson said Office 2019 was not intentionally disabled or modified, but simply cannot accept the new certificate because there is no update path for an out-of-support product. The company also notes that the support lifecycle for Office 2019 was set at five years in its end-of-support notice.
What users can do next
For those moving from Office 2019 to a newer Mac version, Microsoft says the process involves downloading and running the License Removal Tool before opening Office and checking for updates through Help > Check for Updates. That step is required to activate the newer setup properly.
Microsoft also offers Microsoft 365 on the web at no cost as an alternative for users who need access without installing a desktop app. On Mac, the latest supported version is Office 2024, while Office 2021 remains usable until it reaches end of support in October 2026.
For the newest versions, Microsoft lists minimum system requirements that users must meet. Mac devices need macOS 12 Monterey or later with app version 16.83 or newer, while iPhone and iPad devices need iOS 17.0 or iPadOS 17.0 with app version 2.93 or newer.
