Saudi Arabia is set for a rare sky event on 2 August 2027, when a total solar eclipse will briefly turn daytime into darkness in Makkah. The total phase is expected to last up to 5 minutes, making it one of the most notable celestial events in the country in years.
The eclipse will not be limited to Makkah alone. Several areas in western and southwestern Saudi Arabia are also expected to fall within the path of totality, while the eastern part of the country will see only a partial eclipse.
Key Timing for Makkah
| Stage | Local Time |
|---|---|
| Partial Eclipse Begins | 12:01:58 |
| Total Eclipse Begins | 13:24:06 |
| Peak Total Eclipse | 13:26:41 |
| Total Eclipse Ends | 13:29:16 |
| Partial Eclipse Ends | 14:53:25 |
According to a report cited by CNBC Indonesia from Arabia Wether, the eclipse in Makkah will begin at 12:01 local time and end at 14:53. The peak will be short, but it is enough to make the Sun appear to vanish completely from the midday sky.
Other Cities on the Totality Path
Jeddah, Taif, Abha, Jazan, and Al-Baha are also expected to be on the path of the total solar eclipse. That gives residents across a wide stretch of western Saudi Arabia a chance to witness the event more clearly.
Eastern Saudi Arabia, meanwhile, is expected to experience only a partial eclipse. Even so, the level of darkness is still projected to be high, reaching more than 60%.
That means most of Saudi Arabia will experience a much more dramatic sky event than an ordinary eclipse. For people in Makkah and nearby areas, 2 August 2027 is shaping up to be one of the most striking astronomical moments of the decade.
